The Aaenans
by Agnes Stewart
" As we went down the last steep hill to the Aenans Bay earlier this year, and saw the rough wooden cross there, I remembered that it was justa day short of the 60th anniversary of the burial of the "Unknown Sailor", whose body was washed up and buried here on 16th May, 1917. For sixty years, generations of "Aenans-goers" have looked after the grave. In some twenty-five years I have known three different crosses, and have done my share of straightening them, and putting in the odd nail, when a winter's storm has taken it's toll.
The Aenans is a beautiful little bay, some four miles or so south-east of Machrihanish, with a glen running down to the sea. Two townships used to stand there; of the smaller, Inneans Beg on the north side, nothing remains, but a few walls still stand at Inneans Mor on the south side, memorial to the people of the townships of a past and nearly forgotten age."
