Campbeltown to Machrihanish Light Railway

Postby Machrihanish » Wed Mar 01, 2006 12:22 am

Had an interesting comment from a visitor to the Machrihanish site:

Having watched the BBC Countryfile Programme about the Mull of Kintyre last Sunday, I wonder if any thought has been given to rebuilding the Campbeltown and Machrinash Railway as a tourist attraction? Whilst the idea may seem far fetched, elsewhere in Britain the Lynton and Barnstaple and the Welsh Highland Railway, both of which closed in the 1930s are slowly being re-built. Ideally it could be linked in with say a paddle steamer journey from Glasgow.

Anyone want to reply ?

All the best

machrihanish

I don't think there would be many who would not like to see something like that again in the town.

I have ceramic jugs that I have always believed were part of the contents thrown out when the carriages were being dismantled. If they really are from that era maybe they were part of the decoration!

Does anybody know if there was there refreshments sold on board? I have never read the book

Yes, I've seen photos of the trains running along the harbour. What about the rest of the line though?

ANYWAY.. back to my question Did the train have a refreshment trolley?

Wile job getting an answer on here if you are a female  or is that my imagination. By the way I stayed in a prefab and they were perfect apart from the ice inside the windows in winter and you could cook your dinner on the sideboard in the summer because of the heat. They were like ovens at times. They never looked anything like the grand mansions that bobbie posted but they were mansions to us A toilet AND a bathroom 8)

Don't know aboot a couple of jugs but there is more that a few mugs on here that canna answer a female. jdcarra did his best and that's awe that's asked but I'm a bit fraught and worried aboot the tone oh this board it does seem tae be a bit masculine right enough. Ah doot ah doot we'll need tae try and attract mair of of the female gender or the species will die oot. Good luck wae yer nice jugs They are very nice.

I'm away ben tae see my freen bochan mor

Hi Jeanette, those pitchers are lovely. Do they have anything stamped on the bottom? Railway companies often had their logos stamped somewhere on the dishes along with the hallmark of the china co.

Yes, got the book already and very good it is too; meat'n'veg to a "history junkie" like me.

Comparing the drawing in the book to the OS map you can pick-out the likely route of both canal and trackbed.

Presumably they stopped shooting on the rifle range when there was a train passing, or was a moving target considered to be more of a challenge?

Ev'n the Bubble bird canna cum bach wae a guid answur tae ye Jeanette, an aye thot he wuz a cliffer bird.
Oniway bach tae yur question, aboot a refreshments trolley. I hae it oan pretty guid athority thit ther wuz niffer a trolley on board the train, twas too bumpy a track.

On a lightur note Pete Reek wuz ah stoaker oan the train, an whin it wid cross oe'r roon the bach oh the hungry hoose, he wid load it up wae Peat, which wid make it Reek till it was filled wae smokeless coal oot at the pit.
Cuid it be thit this ist wher he took his name fae ?they used tae sing this wee sang aboot him, goes lake this.

Here's a sang, aboot a man called Pete.
He'd stoak the engine, till it wid Reek.
You cuid see it coming ,from miles around.
But the Laggan express, wuid'nt make ah sound.
A'l the men wuid whistle, and the weemin wuid sing.
An the bairn wid shout, Pete ring yur ding a ling.
An wae a big black face, and teeth so white.
Pete wid Ring he's bell, fae morn tae night.
But lake a guid things, it wid cum tae an end.
Cause he went off track, an roon the bloody bend.
Noo it cuid have been the coaldust,or it cuid hav been the brew.
An we asked oor local doctor, but he dinna hae a clue.
The oni thing he thot oh, thit cuid make Pete pull hi's plugs.
Wuz the thot oh that Jeaneete, an hur lov'ly per oh Jugs.
