Lussa Loch

Postby EMDEE » Thu May 31, 2012 12:50 am

Just wondering if anybody has any information on when Lussa Loch was dammed, and how many buildings are under the water?

Also wondering when Auchalochy dam was built to create the present water supply for the town?

Any info?

My great great uncle Malcolm McMillan was the last tennant
at Bordadubh, what is now the loch was a large meadow, it
was flooded in 1947, Bordadubh and Collusca water used to
join and run through the meadow. There was no actual buildings
in the meadow but there was the bridge that went over the burn
to Stramolloch. I remember seeing it once on the way to Bordadubh
think it was 1982 with the Sea Cadets, the water had dropped down
past the angling club huts. Also heard of anglers boats catching their keels
on the parapet of the the bridge when the water lvel was low.

The original Lochruan Water-Works began supplying Campbeltown in 1877.

Work began on the Lussa hydro-electric scheme in 1948, after initial surveys and tests the previous year.

In 1949, work began on Auchalochy and Lochruan reservoirs above the town

In 1952 fish from the Howietoun Fish Farm , Bannochburn, Stirling were introduced to the Auchalochy and Lochruan reservoirs.

In 1954 the Auchalochy reservoir was increased in size to provide for the town's increasing water needs.

The Lussa hydro-electric dam was completed in 1956 and fish from Howietoun Fish Farm were introduced.
