Arthur's Seat, Campbeltown:

Postby Iain » Sun Apr 29, 2012 1:10 pm

Can someone tell me were is/was "Arthur’s Seat" in Campbeltown ?

This is probably a genealogy question as the address is sourced from the 1911 census..., nonetheless, I suppose it's also a “local history” question.
Looking at the census in detail, it could be in the Dalaruan Street area. Couldn't find anything on Google !

Thanks in advance..., Iain.

Thanks Pete ! I have a number 79 Arthurs Seat..., so its obviously a long road.

Also checked out Dalintober School and as you say it could have been where the High Street is today..., and extention to Dalaruan Street/ (Terrace before)
http://maps.google.fr/maps?q=Dalintober ... 6,,0,-0.51

I'm really surprised there's nowhere in the town's website that provide this type of information !! :(

Don't want to cause an argument, but way back in the late 60s it was local knowledge when you went into the Kinloch for a pint you never sat in the seat next to the door leading on to Longrow South, for that was Arthur's seat.
I know my Summer'll never come
I know I'll cry until my dying day has come
Let the Winter roll along

Lol ! Nonetheless..., an interesting remark ! So, in that case..., who was Arthur ? :)

It's peculiar that in all census reports from 1901 and before, I don't ever recall seeing the name. But in the 1911 census, it's just about everywhere !

My Great Grandfather Robert McArthur, (remember the butcher in Longrow..., his son Dugald I think) he lived in Dalaruan Terrace in 1901 and in the 1911 he's suddenly in 79 Arthur's Seat..., despite the fact that Dalaruan Street is still there today !

If I remember rightly his surname was McArthur......so Arthur McArthur.

:) My grandson is called Arthur McArthur "Private." I think that's wishful thinking..., although it could lead to another great fairy tale. Lol !

I'm studying a posting by Rodger who, some years ago posted an article concerning ancient Campbeltown maps. Also... http://maps.nls.uk/towns/index.html and others.
Nonetheless, Arthur’s Seat, (like in Edinburgh which should normally be high up) there’s nothing to be found:

Hi all ! I do believe I’ve found the story behind Arthur’s Seat !

I’ve just been studying the 1911 census for Dalaruan Street and there’s a pile of names..., for example:
Craigie Place with 4 families / Craig-Gowan / Arthurs Seat / Dalaruan St. (no name) / Dalaruan House / Cowdenknowes / etc.

I could be wrong, but it looks as if Arthur’s Seat is simply a house name ! And probably the invention of Robert McArthur and his 14 McArthur children who lived there.
