It was painted clandestinely by Archibald McKinnon a local artist.
He dreamed that he would do the painting at night in secret.
Over two or three nights he would worrk by lantern and candle light.
On the final night his lights were seen by local fishemen from their boat between Auchenhoan Head and the island. They were too afraid to investigate in the darkness but investigate next day.
They were completely astonished by their discovery and contacted the town officials and clergy, every one sure that this was a message from heaven.
Eventually McKinnon tolld them he was responsible, the towns people headed by local councilors and officials made it clear that thet felt deceived and McKinnon went to live in Nantwich in Cheshire. He returned twice to repair the painting, the last in 1934 soon before his death.
