The author encouraged by the increasing number of enquiries from home and abroad decided to write this book as a guide for ancestor hunters seeking links and names in Kintyre.
There are 3 strands to research in Kintyre – the original Gaelic families, the lowland families who were encouraged to settle in Kintyre in the 17th century and the Irish immigrants who arrived mostly in the 19th century.
As time has advanced these families have become intertwined. After the massacre at Dunaverty that led to families being disinherited and having to flee left the way open for the Campbell’s to take over. And there was vast increase in records that led to it being possible to form a fairer picture of the families who inhabited Kintyre until mandatory registration of births deaths and marriages in 1855.
This book can be a good starting point for further research and encourages the researcher to source other records. The book itself is a good source for meanings of names and the history of many names in Kintyre.
The book is published by the author for private circulation from his home address here in Campbeltown.
