That's a coincidence.
It must have been before '71 as we left in the January of that year. The only name I knew was Ian Lang, never had a clue who the rest were.

That would confirm it as June 1970 then. :D

Before Tony, and before my father's time with the band, then.

I certainly was.

We travelled down on the Thursday which gave us the whole of Friday "off the leash". Tony had quite a few contacts in Corby among ex-Campbeltonians, and our base during our stay was between the British Legion Club and the adjoining Orange Club.

We had the World's on the Saturday, and on Sunday we travelled to Nottingham for another Pipe Band Competition. Ian Lang won the Drum Majors' Competition on the Sunday at Nottingham and that evening when we returned to Corby he filled the cup with whisky and passed it round the whole band (very nice gesture). That was just the beginning of a very convivial evening. One of my memories of that outing to Nottingham was our stop at Melton Mowbray on our return journey to Corby and having a pint or three of a local brew called "Robin Hood Ale" (very pleasant stuff)

It was a great weekend with the pipe band, and I can certainly confirm that Mary G's father Andrew was also with us on that expedition. :D

There were a few empty seats on the bus so my Auntie Ina(McGown) came down with yous'e.I remember it was a glorious day.I was sitting on the grass with Catherine and my two young lads(3 and 1) when she happened to pass by.It was a real out of the blue surprise, and the icing on a great day.
I do not know how she fared on the bus with you lot as I am pretty certain she was tee-total.

Yes - my father certainly was in Corby. We heard many tales of the band's time there on his return....

My recollection is the World's were in Corby in 1976, not 1975 as Bill suggests. You able to confirm one way or another, EMDEE?

I say so not least because it was a scorching summer, with crop fields rendered to a cinder in the intense heat. And being a farmer, my father was interested to see the contrast between the route to Corby and our own Kintyre landscape, which was also enduring the same heatwave, but not to the same extent. And that was the notorious summer of '76, was it not?

From the history of the Lothian and Borders Police ---- Corby was 1975 : ( but I also thought the HOT summer wis 76! --Both75 and 76 were exceptional with the 76 being warmer I have been told ! )

"The band was probably at its best under Iain Mcleod in the early 1970’s, recording back to back wins at the World Championships in 1971 and 1972. Iain however, was most thrilled by the band’s victory at the Intercontinental Championship in Canada in 1972 when the band competed for the first time against the top bands from North America
Iain McLeod was to finish his time as Pipe major in the mid seventies much as he had started, on a high! The bands name was changed in May 1975 to the Lothian and Borders Police and was again to lift the world title at Corby, Northamptonshire that year, narrowly beating Muirhead & Sons Pipe Band from Grangemouth."
Twice through the eye o' the sun to lift it.

It was 1975. As I recollect 1975 was a hot summer as well as 1976.

Great clipping pics, Martin :)

What farm is that? Could be any number - it all looks so typical for the time.

From your discription, Martin I think it may be an old farm called Blarry and if so the 1st clipper could be Finlay Clark it may also be his father, also Finlay who is packing the wool bag. Great photos :)
