Campbeltown Cross - Funerals

Postby ChrisA » Wed Feb 02, 2011 12:36 pm

Hi guys.

Curious about the tradition with funeral corteges going around the cross. Is this still observed? Is it purely for Campbeltonians, or all Kintyre people? Any exceptions? Why did the tradition originate?

It is an old Campbeltown custom that the hearse goes round the cross before going to the cemetery. It was once outside the town hall but got moved to kilkerran cemetery during the war and later down to the harbour. As far as I know, as long as you're being buried in Campbeltown you are driven round the cross before heading along kilkerran.

I have a recollection that the tradition of going around the cross applies to brides on their way to church too. Can anyone confirm?

I went round the cross the day I got married too. Pretty sure I'll go round it the day I'm on my way to Kilkerran.

I'm still trying to work out which one will be happier
