Why should they be able to claim all these expenses anyway? On the colossal wages they are paid they should be able to afford everything easily.

I see Geoff Hoon is the latest in this series of revelations:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7983946.stm

Kenneth Clarke says that "at least two thirds of MPs are doing nothing improper". Does this not imply that he thinks the other third are doing something improper?

What chance is there that anything will change?

What a furore we now have about all this, and Michael Martin trying to blame everyone except the ones with their snouts in the trough. He is probably annoyed that his own fairly substantial gravy train is possibly going to hit the buffers. 8)

Why is there now so much consensus among politicians that the rules need changed? If they all believe they need changed, why have they not changed them? Is it possibly because the rules were OK as long as the taxpayer was not aware of the extravagances and indulgences, and the number of MPs who were feathering their own nests at our expense until someone let the cat out of the bag? :?

I couldn`t believe my ears today, when Jackie Brambles on Loose Women said that maybe if their pay was increased then the allowances could be scrapped! Don`t they get paid plenty already? She says they don`t get paid very much! On their very ample wages they should easily be able to afford the extra costs themselves, why should WE pay?

I have always said that I will never come to terms with the evil that Margaret Thatcher perpetrated on British society but this lot, spawned by the greed of Blair, are now coming close to that. For at least the next two generations at least, New Labour will be seen as the party best represented by a picture of snouts in troughs. Tales of buying kit-kats, dog food, tampons, repairs to swimming pools, and porn, all on expenses, are humiliating enough but the latest wave of this vulgar venality defending their claims are sickening beyond belief.

But as said before by someone on here, surely the problem of MP's finances is easy to solve. Their pay goes up another £10,000 and gets independently reviewed. Their accommodation is purpose-built, state-owned, secure, one-bedroom flats. They only get economy class travel expenses. All their research and administration is supplied and funded from a central pool – which is recruited by merit and not family connection. Simple

Actually, I’m feeling a bit pig sick with all the recent revelations. Fed up with my rat-race, hectic world of work and feeling I could just do nicely with a free flat screen TV and a freebie visit to John Lewis, I had plans to become an MP myself. The bar for entry doesn't seem to be set very high and they seem to let anyone with half a brain in so I didn't think it would be too much of a challenge. But now they're going to get rid of the perks, well, it hardly seems worth the effort. :(
Any jobs going in Kintyre with the same gravy boat mentality?????? I can point fingers and rant with the best of the Mick Martins of this world.

I'm trying to work out what is funnier, a cabinet Minister claiming of a bath plug whilst on a £141,000 salary, or a Tory MP claiming £2,000 to have their moat cleaned.

PS. I've got a good mind to get in touch with Douglas Hogg, the moat cleaners I use are a lot cheaper than £2,000. Those peasants are forever falling in the water whilst trying to storm the ramparts. :D Let them eat cake I say! Obviously that's as long as you can you claim cake on expenses? :?

One Tory MP claimed 388 pounds for buying horse shit. If he had just waited he wouldn't have had to buy it. There's plenty of it about in the wake of these revelations.

To be honest, I agreed with Steven Fry that it's another media frenzy.
Fiddling expenses seems to be endemic these days.

However, what does get my back up is the hypocracy !
The British public are being bled dry in the 21st century, and subjected to a contstant jargon barrage.

Phrases like "value for money", "accountability","transaprency".
The government are quick enough to pry mercilessly into our private affairs & implemement draconian measures
... freezing bank accounts, smash & grab asset raids.

The system is being abused, not from below, but from above.
DOUBLE STANDARDS & HYPOCRACY are the main crimes here.

Sure, MPs will publicly reprimand themselves & mete out a few token wrist slappings ... and then back to business.
The real questions, about real issues, will as usual go unanswered.

And if you think a Conservative Government will make the slightest bit of difference, you are insane.
We are no longer a nation, we are a state.

Probably for the first time £3.73 but I don’t agree. I, like many other working class families, were brought up with moral standards: we all know what’s right and when to do the right thing. Sadly, morality in Parliament seems to be lost with their current “I am within the rules" stance that some of them have taken.

How dare you disagree with me GG !!! I know it's within the rules but c'mon lol

To be fair, a lot of people arent in a position to claim expenses, but amongst those who are, then there certainly appears to be a "broader definition" of morality than in days gone by.

"Greed is good" has been in vogue since the 80's, however, I know exactly where you're coming from, as, by the sounds of it, I was programmed with the same moral code as yourself.
