As far as I know Big Ben has not been renamed, the bell is still called Big Ben. It is the bell tower, which houses Big Ben, that may be renamed.

IIRC, the bell tower does not have a name, so calling it 'The Elizabeth Tower' or whatever now is not a rename, it's a naming, and I happen to think the new name is very appropriate :D

ps I also think Ionns other rename suggestions are excellent ones too :P

A popular misconception, St Stephens is the name of one of the other (lesser) towers.

It's commonly known as The Clock Tower and according to the BBC News site .............. "the change is because of a campaign, backed by most MPs and the three main party leaders, to rename the tower in recognition of the Queen's 60 year reign. At present the famous central London landmark is described by the Palace of Westminster as the Clock Tower. The Big Ben nickname originally referred to the 13.5 tonne Great Bell within the tower, but has long been the commonly used name for the clock and tower as a whole"

The folly of renaming McCallum street to Aqualibrium Avenue pales a bit in comparison. Maybe one of our Councillors has decided to go national with the name game!
