Terminology in the Media

Postby LANDROVER ROGER » Sat May 29, 2010 10:06 am

I get extremely annoyed by media coverage of the murder of three women in Bradford. These unfortunate individuals are referred to as prostitutes first and foremost and not as women. If a man had been murdered in a red light area, would the media refer to him as a user of prostitutes or just as a male?

Two American marines - and 14 Afghan soldiers.

ionns, if they weren't american marines, they would have been american soldiers (army) or american airmen (air force) or american sailors (navy).. I just thinking that there is a possibility that there aren't any afghan marines, don't think it is meant to be derogatory.

See when you look at the ingredients printed on food packaging, it always gives you the main ingredient first. 8)

I'm quite surprised that you missed my point, admittedly my example was media spin, rather than terminology.

I didn't miss anything...

But if 3 people in my family were injured and 3 neighbors down the street who I liked and cared about were injured in the same accident, if I was passing on the information to my friends I probably wouldn't mention the people down the street first...

A fair and valid point. However this can be taken to extremes, Flight Lieutenant GI Joe, bruised his finger, last night over Hiroshima.
On the other extreme it could read: Black mob rapes White women. Both are examples of bad journalism.
