Tales from the supermarket Part 2

Postby Martin » Thu May 02, 2013 10:36 am

I asked the man who does my shopping for me if he'd be good enough to pick me up a packet of Pearl Barley. He asked a woman in the supermarket if they stocked it and the reply was, "ugh, is that sweets ?". The woman got two more of her coven from "out the back" and they both asked if Pearl Barley is sweets.
Ouch !

Well done Roger, I suppose that's worthy of half a groan, grudgingly.

Martin, I have to say I haven't used pearl barley for many a year now. I get a supermarket online grocery delivery every week and it astounds me sometimes what the packers substitute. When I ordered 4 courgettes, they didn't have any so sent me 4 cucumbers instead! One time, they said they didn't have dog food and I got 12 cans of Whiskas!!!!

I've never used a supermarket delivery service and from what you've just said I would certainly think twice about doing so.
I bet your dog wasn't impressed ?

Aren't we getting ever so slightly decadent? Do we expect our every whim to be met by other people who are at the end of a computer.

Supermarkets have already closed down most of the town centres and small shopkeepers in the UK and now they are selling us cucumbers for courgettes. They do look similar, and you could probably be forgiven for mistaking one for the other. I do appreciate that one is much smaller than the other, but Hey! c'est la vie. We all have that problem. Next they'll be selling us plantains for bananas.

To qoute the Catherine Tait show - "The dirty bastards!"

You think that is odd, I ordered a pack of Beef Burgers and got Horse Burgers, but they didn't say they had no Beef Burgers in stock.

Any dog worth his salt would eat Whiskas with no problem. I know that our Yorkshire Terrier regularly (every day) finishes off the cat food, as the cat just takes a wee bit and leaves the premises. She has become a kind of community cat, who transfers her allegience between households wherever she can get the best deal, as cats do, and has become an exceptionally fat cat into the bargain. She has endeared herself to quite a few families in the area and has now become what could be described as relatively overweight, but is also everyone's friend.

To my nose, I think some cat food smells pretty appetising. I don't ask what it's made of, I just think that if I was stuck, I wouldn't mind making a sandwich with it. Don't get me wrong, it wouldn't be my snack of choice. As I say it would be if I was stuck. Some catfood smells really good. This is the sachets in jelly that I am talking about, not the dreadful canned meat. that is a different matter.

This is not just my opinion, I have also heard other people say the same.

That is definitely something I would not even think about with dog food, as it generally smells the same when it goes into the dog as it does when it comes out.

For Christ's sake Martin, what have you started here? :<>

Probably over stating the obvious but the Customer Service desk would be the place to ask,or a checkout operator.

Were they getting pearl barley confused with barley sugar?

Don't think I've seen pearl barley on its own for a while, but there are soup and broth mixtures which also contain split peas.

They could well have meant barley sugar, I hadn't thought of that.
Pearl Barley is available in larger supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s and Asda at around 55 pence a packet, but those shops are a bit out of the way.
Haven’t used the stuff in a few years and I just thought it might make a change to help fill out a stew.

I get Pearl Barley in the Co-op in town, and usually add some to whatever soup I'm making.
Haven't tried it in a stew as Martin suggests he does, but might just do that. I always have some in the cupboard along with lentils and sometimes broth mix.
Some days I jeest donno hoots hoot an hoots naw hoot.
