GPS on HTC Wildfire

Postby Delphinus_Dreams » Wed Mar 06, 2013 6:06 pm

I'm often out and about with the dogs and after reading on here about walks on Kintyre I downloaded map my walk yesterday to log the various routes we take.
I set off from near Kennacraig ferry terminal but my phone often had trouble with the GPS signal.
It seems I spent 2 hours walking and only covered 2 miles!

Is it the app? My phone, or just a dodgy signal area? :?

I'm wondering if it's worth trying Google My Tracks?
Do any of you use a similar phone app? If so what do you think is the best?

I don't own a HTC but I have owned a GPS for quite a while. In my experience, when the GPS loses the signal (in a forest for example) in loses the ability to track your route and therefore the ability to calculate distance covered. However, it does not lose the ability to track time and bases its calculations on all available data gathered giving warped results such as speed of travel, average speed, time travelled etc....

Or perhaps you simply walk really, really slowly :)

:o I don't think I'm that slow! And I have a loony dog to help me up the hills
I did the same route tonight and it measured 4 miles in an hour and a half :?
I might give the google one a try tomorrow, although I like my other half's theory that we went through a wormhole or a time warp... however, I think we might have noticed

Are you using Google Maps on your HTC or a third party mapping software which holds the whole of the UK maps on your Micro SD card ?

Also what network is your handset on ?

Or you could buy an Ordnance Survey map and a ruler.

Oh yes, you tend to notice things like that. It does confuse the cr*p out of your GPS for a while though :)

Well, today it posted on facebook (after I had set it NOT to) it informed my friends I would be walking in 4 hours time (I had been and gone already) and I would be stopping a mile before I got home, my average speed being over 7kmph 8)

I've removed it, it was driving me bonkers

Sorry, very busy with repairs ATM.....

The trouble is, the Vodafone data signal is not very fast in this area, Google relies on a good strong signal to help your assisted GPS so map data will not be loaded correctly, you really need an app that you can download onto the wildfire that includes all map data, once that is stored on your Micro SD card this will solve that problem etc

Thank you Maxmix, that explains why Sky Map didn't work either! :D

Yep 100% correct....

Any App (Which is quite a lot nowadays) relies on an active Data / GPRS / 3G / Edge to be active etc

The fastest ATM in Kintyre and most reliable data signal is provided by '3 UK' after being with Vodafone for 20+ years and selling their products here in Campbeltown, I finaly made the move to Hutchinson's 3 last year, never looked back since...

3 Mobile's GSM signal is not the most widespread her, Voda and O2 holds it's own with calling in Kintyre.... Orange/EE and T-Mobile follow up, I am hearing from my customers that T-Mobile has been improving greatly in the last 6 months here....

Hope this helps :)
