This may seem daft but although I know Kintyre has the characteristics of an island, is it called an isle? I haven't heard it called that before but tonight on opening my cheese . . .

Tarbert means "drawboat" in Norse and referred to a place where Vikings dragged their boats across land on rollers from one sea to another. In 1093, King Malcolm of Scotland and King Magnus Barelegs of Norway agreed the Western Isles were to belong to Norway and the mainland to Scotland. An island was defined as anything a Viking ship could sail around, so Magnus proclaimed Kintyre an island by having his dragon ship dragged across the 1.6km (1 mile) of dry land from West Loch Tarbert on the Atlantic to East Loch Tarbert on Loch Fyne.

It seems like cheese makers are taking lessons from the delivery folk by turning us into an island.
We certainly are not, no matter how many boats bare legged Vikings drag from the West Loch.

One wee instance of the unfair way we are treated. Wanted to buy an article which cost £26:30.
Delivery cost: £27:70. so dearer to get delivered than to buy, and we have a Paisley post code, which makes our car insurance more costly.

I was thinking it was named because of the company's link to Gigha.

Okay, that makes sense now I have googled the company BUT sorry if these are stupid questions:

1. Is Gigha technically an 'Isle' of Kintyre then?

2. If the company is in Gigha, as on their website, why does it say Campbeltown on the pack? :@

Hi Govangirl

In answer to question 1

Gigha is an island off the west of Kintyre which you may know,so technically not part of Kintyre. Its just as Bill mentioned and my thoughts also their name "Isle of Kintyre" could derive from part of the company being on the island and in Campbeltown,Kintyre.

And to question 2

Obviously with production expanding the bulk of the company has moved from Gigha ,the goats produce the milk on the island which I take it is then shipped to the more economical production premises in Kirk Street,Campbeltown.

We could give the owners a call for a more precise answer. :)

I've often thought that "Isle off Kintyre" would be an interesting play on words considering the Gigha connection.
