Bagpipes

Postby Govangirl » Thu Jun 07, 2012 4:22 pm

I know it will probably all end in tears but I've decided that I'm going to go for one of my musical 'must-do' things on my bucket list. I've always wanted to play the accordian or the bagpipes and I'm going to go for the latter thinking it might be easier
I have tried everywhere down here to find a teacher but to no avail :( so I've ordered a training DVD from the internet that takes you through the basics but I don't want to purchase a set of pipes yet. I know that Iain on here plays (and is no doubt laughing his head off about me thinking I could master his skill) so I need advice. Am I right that I could purchase a practice chanter and learn on that? Am I mad to think I could learn to play as it is too difficult?
Where else to ask than the world's expert area? Any advice would be gratefully received.

GG, why do you doubt that you could learn to play? True, you won't become a maestro overnight, but even the accomplished players weren't born that way. Go for it, I look forward to your first recital 8)

Ha ha, it's just that I imagine it's a very difficult instrument to play? I know lots of folk learn to play other instruments by themselves but don't know about the bagpipes.

had a friend that learnt on the web, dont know how but he did, hes dead now so cant ask him about it, but I think you should most certainly try. Life is WAY to short to be laying on your death bed remembering all the things you didnt do but should have.

Try the College of Piping - they do Skype tuition:

They are also a very useful resource to make contact, buy the 'Tutor' books, seek out teachers near you, etc.

Takes a while GG. You start with a chanter. My son learnt to play and has his chanter usually lying in the living room. One morning, while tidying up I came across it. I thought, "I'm going to have a wee shot o this, I can play the recorder so it shouldn't be too hard" wrong!! I couldn't get a sound out of it! Needless to say I never let on to my son! There must be a knack to it...... Good luck in finding it! :-)

A lot depends on your own motivation and determination, plus the accessibility to tuition. I don't think there is really a substitute for the personal contact with a tutor and you should try to make contact with some player(s) in your locality. (Not so easy in the south of England as it is in Argyll) If you have looked into it you will be aware that it will be some considerable time before you graduate on to the GHB as opposed to the practice chanter, and this is where the determination comes in, as progress can be very slow as there is so much to learn. The length of time it takes to get to the stage of playing a few tunes wll depend on what you put into it, but be aware that musical instruments can take over your life, none more so than the GHB.

If you're even considering this you must already have a degree of motivation, so go for it and see how you get on. :D

GHB???? :@  I feel really daft now not knowing that - is it somehing Highland bagpipes?
Thank you all for your advice and support. I did play the clarinet many, many moons ago so I'm not devoid of any talent musically but I'm hoping I'll advance. If I don't, at least I went for it. Again, thanks all. :D
