M74 COMPLETION

Postby bill » Tue Jun 28, 2011 10:14 pm

With the opening today of the M74 extension from Carmyle towards the M8 south of the Kingston Bridge,(rejoining the M8 after Junction 22), this should make the journey home that bit shorter and quicker.

Everyone in Glasgow is excited re the opening of this new section of motorway. 20 years being thought up, stalled for 10 and now completed after 5 years.

It will take between 25,000-30,000 cars A DAY off the Kingston Bridge. This means a massive difference to those who use the bridge on a daily basis.

It will cut journey times going to Campbeltown and returning. Every little helps. Its meant detours, roadworks and traffic jams to make this happen, but it will make a difference for those heading up (or down) to Kintyre. :D

I'm heading down to sunny Leeds in August, can't wait to try the new road :D Up until now, I always tried to make the trip through the night to avoid the terror of being stationary involuntary on a hot urban motorway for hours.

Maybe just a wee bit over the top in your generalization Bobh. The residents with the giant flyovers within sight and sound were not too complimentary on the news report. :<>

Having moved from the west side of Glasgow to Cambuslang last month I'm pleased about the new extension - traffic seems light round Glasgow today but then again with the schools on holiday it is generally a bit lighter.

Yes, I believe Scotland is a country and should therefore govern itself.
No, Scotland is not a country it is simply part of the UK and should therefore be governed from London.

Fair point Bill, i certainly would not like that either, Although everyone i have spoken to i.e. work colleagues and other agencies i deal with, family, and friends i socialise with appear to be pleased about it. I've not personally heard, other than on the TV say a negative comment.

Except bill that, as far as I know, there is no northbound (well, westbound) on ramp at Carmyle. I suppose there was no point in building one as the motorway ended, until yesterday, around half a mile to the west at the Fullarton roundabout.

"Motorists travelling northbound on the M74, who intend continuing west of Glasgow on the M8 (e.g. towards Glasgow Airport), will remain on the M74 at Maryville Junction 4."

There is no on ramp because it is a continuation of the M74.

We can all argue about whether it's a good/bad use of £750m or whether it will actually increase/decrease pollution - however I went for a wee run along it last night, and one thing's for certain ....... it's a fantastic piece of engineering.

I didn't realise just how much of it was elevated. The span over Eglinton Street and the West Coast Mainline (as it heads into Central) is quite incredible. You do't get much a feel for it when you're driving along, but when you're heading down Pollokshaws Road it's very impressive - from a structural engineering perspective.

I don't travel that route during rush hour, but I wonder what difference it may today?

I know its a continuation of the existing M74, my (rather pernickety) point was that, in my view the original part did not end at Carmyle, it ended west of that at Fullarton. Maybe that is still classed as Carmyle, I don't know.

Going northbound on the original M74 you could leave at Carmyle (singposted Cambuslang and Shettleston) and you can join to go southbound for Carlisle.

Perhaps 'on ramp' is the wrong phrase then - is that solely for when you leave one motorway for another? Lets say 'slip road on' then, the fact is, if you are driving on Clydeford Road in Carmyle you cannot join to go northbound, only southbound.

As I said earlier, this is understandable, as prior to the extention, had you been able to join northbound at Carmyle, you would have been forced to exit again only a short distance later at Fullarton.

So if I am travelling North on the M74 then onto the M8 heading west, how much time will this new section save as opposed to what it would normally take going the previous way ?

Pete.

Transport ourselves forward for one year, it will end up another highly congested, fuel polluted mass of choking traffic.
( much like the new stretch of M77 )

I went on to the new stretch at Cambuslang last Friday, mid-afternoon, and was at the airport in under fifteen minutes (not exceeding the speed limit!).
