I had an email from the forum to say I had a private message but no message has appeared yet.

Then the message sender has changed their mind and deleted the message.
When a PM is sent, it doesn't actually get transferred to the other members inbox until that member logs in - it stays in the outbox of the sender. That allows the sender the opportunity to delete it if desired. HTH.
