40 YEARS AGO TODAY

Have your say....

40 YEARS AGO TODAY

Postby bill » Sat Aug 08, 2009 10:19 am

The Beatles walked across a zebra crossing on the road in St John's Wood, north London, at 11.35am on August 8 1969, for an image caught on the cover of their classic album Abbey Road.

When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now.
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine.
If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door,
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.
(A FEW YEARS TO GO YET) 8)
I know my Summer'll never come
I know I'll cry until my dying day has come
Let the Winter roll along
I've got nothing left but song

I remember that there was a rumour/hoax in the media that Paul McCartney was dead. There is supposed to be cryptic clues on the cover and in some of the song lyrics to support the rumour.
I can not remember the significance of the number plate, but I do remember the clue in their attire.John is supposed to be dressed as a preacher,Ringo as the undertaker,Paul is the deceased, and George as the gravedigger.

The number plate is 28IF, taken to mean that Paul would have been 28 had he lived.
Ouch !

I am in agreement with you Hugh, though it is one of the Beatles most successful albums.
Abbey Road was the best-selling album of 1969 in the UK, and the fourth best-selling of the entire 1960s, and the eighth best-selling album of 1970.
In the USA the album spent 11 non-consecutive weeks at the top,It was the 4th best-selling album of 1970 in the US and is now certified 12x platinum by the RIAA.

aye that would be the VW with the reg plate, far from their best i agree but it does have some moments on it. although not me fav track "Something" is the most recorded Beatles track by miles and made George a mountain of money on his own.

"Something" is the standout track on the album, and was described by Frank Sinatra as the greatest love song ever written.

I cannot comment on "Come Together" "Sun King" "Carry That Weight/Golden Slumbers" being extremely influential ,but I would like to hear your explanation as to why you think hey were.

As to "Something" being just a love song, that's like describing the Cistine Chapel ceiling as just another mural.IMHO.

Having a smile at the lyrics to "When I'm 64" Bill. We were guests at a "non-religious/humanist" wedding last month and "When I'm sixty four" was the wedding "hymn". With a brass quintet accompaniment, it was a real "feel good" tune to have everybody singing along to :D
