ta govan girl and indeed no offence to a very well researched piece ( though pedant that i am if vat is down to 15% then all calculations are out).
In my mind the demise of music is down to the type that has now become popular ie sing-a-long kareoke. The purpose of records and later cds were as advertisments for a live act, to sell tickets. Even dance music, a genre i personally didnt take to, encouraged people to go to clubs and see a live dj act. The miming of groups and individuals who cant cut it live is the route of the decline.
Always used to make me laugh that radio 1 said ''advert free'' yet all they did was play advertisments
So make all music for download free and get off your bum and buy a ticket and see someone plug into an amp.

It was actually the other way around, live shows were a loss making promo for records however the decline in record sales has meant that the industry has put up prices for live shows and swag to counter these losses reversing the situation.
Welcome...

chicken + egg tosh, there was live music venues long afore recordings were available. When they came along they were sold at the gigs to increase revenue and then onto radio etc.
