Theatre

Postby Govangirl » Mon Mar 02, 2009 10:02 pm

I looked for a post on plays but couldn't find one so hope I haven't doubled up here. There are some really good productions on in London. Last week, I saw Miller's A View from the Bridge. It had Ken Stott who was brilliant and had a great Brooklyn accent. I saw this play about ten years ago when it was Anthony La Plagia, who was also great in the role of Eddie.

I've also got tickets for Be Near Me by Andrew O'Hagan which I believe has transferred from Scotland. Having read the book, I'm looking forward to the play although they won't be able to capture O'Hagan's beautiful, descriptive writing.

Next month, I'm going to see Three Days of Rain with James McAvoy.

Anything else that people can recommend?

Perhaps I shouldn't let you know that I'm going in June to see Hamlet, played by Jude Law?

I saw Christopher Marlowe's "Tamburlaine" at the Barbican ('94?). Antony Sher was in the lead role, and he was a big name at the time. But he was crap. He just minced his way through the whole thing. No, he really did.

I've only ever seen Marlowe's Dr Faustus performed, Hugh. Wasn't there a furore some years ago about a production of Tamburlaine being censored for fear of upsetting Muslims? :(

My date with McAvoy is tomorrow Ags but in the meantime you might be interested to know that in June, the Ken Stott production is on in Glasgow for a week. You should really try and go, he's brilliant! Details:

Just back from London. A very enjoyable play with great acting. Actually, I thought Nigel Harman's performance was better than McAvoy's and so did Mr Govangirl. But it was ROASTING in London today and with no air conditioning I was melting in my chair. And the wine I drank made me even worse!
I did something unforgivable: I turned off my phone but forgot that at 5 o'clock the alarm goes off to remind me about my daughter's saxaphone lesson. People stared at me with pure unadulterated disgust - even the wee besom in front of me turned round to look me up and down and SHE spent the whole production eating crisps loudly!

OMG, theatre, cabernet sauvignon, saxaphone . . . is that middle class enough for you, Ionns?

I don't think he's at all handsome, certainly doesn't stir anything in me but I reckon Ags would disagree with you Horse!

You know me well GG -I love McAvoy he's very handsome and a very talented man too!! I am a huge fan of Ken Stott too so i'm away to check out tickets and see if I can fit in the Friday night (which would mean a big rush after school) or the Saturday matinee (to get home in time for a night out!)! So much to do so little time......

Booked tickets last night GG - thankyou so much for pointing that out as I hadn't seen it advertised anywhere! We are going on the Friday so mad rush after school it is but that way I can manage a few hours retail therapy on Saturday and still get home in time for my night out on Saturday night - all I have to do now is break the news to iain that I'm going and he's not!!

Hamlet

Postby Govangirl » Fri Jun 12, 2009 4:46 pm

If anyone's in London and likes Shakespeare, I would recommend Hamlet. I was convinced Jude Law was a movie star and not a real actor but he was outstanding and at times his performance was hypnotic. I hated the costumes (they looked straight out of the Next catalogue!) and the set was at times a bit drab but overall, it was a great experience. He was a very, very different Hamlet to David Tennant's and I could go on and on but well worth a visit, I say. :D

Was in London yesterday to see Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. James Earl Jones was magnificent and I recommend it if anyone is doing a trip to London. Across the road they were showing Morecambe. Has anyone seen it?

Also, has anyone been to the Glasgow pantos? I loved going to them. Who are the stars this year? Are they as funny as they used to be? I recall they were always very topical.
