Memorable opening lines to a song

Have your say....

Memorable opening lines to a song

Postby Walt Jabsco » Tue Jan 27, 2009 1:29 pm

I have been enjoying the threads about intros etc so thought I would start a new thread. A couple of years ago Radio 2 decided to have a vote on the best opening lines to a song ever and the winner was "Werewolves of London" by Warren Zeffron I think. I quite like the song but don't think its the best opening line ever. Now I dont think any of these two are either but points will be awarded if you can name the song and artist, no googling the answer, its just a bit of fun. Two massive songs from my formative years.

1. Bernie rhodes knows don't argue
Why must you record my phone calls?

2. And now theyre trying to take my life away
Forever young I cannot stay
Hey

As I say just a bit of fun, feel free to add your own.

On every corner i can see them there
They don't know my name they don't know my kind
They're after you with their promises

For me it has to be Springsteen's:

"Got a wife and kids in Baltimore Jack, I went out for a ride and I never went back"

Others that spring to mind are Hendrix's:

"Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand."

Or Dolly's (I love this):

"Tumble out of bed and stumble to the kitchen; Pour myself a cup of ambition".

And surely, surely THESE were included somewhere near the top?

"You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar when I met you"
Blow away the dreams that tear you apart
Blow away the dreams that break your heart
Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted

The opening lines are so memorable it's unnecessary to name the singers......or is it?

It was Christmas Eve babe In the drunk tank

And now the end is near, and so I face the final curtain

Well how do you do young Willie McBride

I hear the train a comin'; it's rollin' 'round the bend,
I know my Summer'll never come
I know I'll cry until my dying day has come
Let the Winter roll along
I've got nothing left but song

Just to say the first song was Gangsters by The Specials and the second was 68 guns by the Alarm

Well done Chris for the Specials and Double A for The Alarm

Some for starters, should be plenty to follow :<>

I feel my pulse start to increase the flow
On a cold winter's night with such beauty on show"

He came a walk with me and he told me so
in a song he sang and then I knew
A man is in love with you "

Obviously I had no input into that number. Kego was one for the ladies and I think I was on the Creamola foam from the shop!

Can't even focus on a coffee cup
Don't even know whose bed I'm in
Where do I start
