R & B

I wonder, could anyone tell me what the music that is labelled r & b these days actually has to do with either rhythm or blues, other than the fact that it makes me frick suicidal when I have to listen to it?

Good question and one that has bothered me for a long time. Perhaps somebody, somewhere, has the answer.

It has rhythm, and it makes you feel blue .... sounds like the jobs a good un !!! :)

Or, perhaps its just meaningless dross, written as a vehicle for some aspiring artists brief 5 minute career.
99.9% of any form of music is either highly derivative or rubbish ... but there are always a few diamonds or enduring classics.

And don't start me on the blues !!!

Are we talking about real blues, with it's complex random rhythms, it's rawness .....

or are we talking about the rigid 12 bar patterns, primarily used as a platform to chunder out endless pentatonic cliches (sorry ... solos) by predominently caucasian middle-class guitarists ..... ???

This might sound a bit Zen ... but the beauty of music is often in the mistakes or the spaces ie. what isn't played, rather than what is .....
most days I feel like Gene Hackman in the Poseidon Adventure
