Sad news that one of Hollywood's icons died today. Paul Newman was/is one of my favourite actors and I can't help but feel that a little piece of me goes away with him.

Cool Hand Luke was my favourite film of his. A truly fantastic actor. I remember growing up thinking he was so handsome with those brilliant blue eyes and that cheeky smile. I know he did tremendous work for charity too. Very sad indeed.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Sting are what I remember him most for but he was great no matter what movie he was in.

The man was a legend for more than what he did on the screen. He was a very positive role model, giving millions to charity, starting an organization for gravely ill children, racing until he was 80, producing his own line of salad dressing and sauces, his commitment to his marriage and family. He has said "just because he was a sex symbol there was no reason to commit adultery."

A talented man with integrity has passed on. R.I.P. Paul Newman

Bobbie,

his quote of "Why go out for a burger, when I have steak at home", with regard to his wife, Joanne Woodward, kind of summed him up a wee bit, for me. He seemed to be a guy who never let the fame and fortune get to him.

Back in the seventies I remember my mum say "Sinatra? Ol' blue eyes--they're not as blue as Paul Newman's"

I know it's a cliche but: A life well lived. Those 'celebrities' and wannabee movie stars today can't hold a candle to him. His role in 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' to me was his best but I just love 'Butch Cassidy'. It would be a great idea to bring that back to the big screen, in fact.
And you're right Bobbie, it's more than being a fine actor. He was a great humanitarian and philanthropist but with humility.
