OK. How about 'The Shadow of the Wind' by Carlos Ruiz Zafon for a starter. It's out now in paperback.

If you'd rather something 'lighter', try 'Cold Granite' by Stuart MacBride - first crime novel in what I think will be a series from an author who looks like becoming Aberdeen's answer to Edinburgh's Ian Rankin.
