Non Oscar Winners

Have your say....

Non Oscar Winners

Postby Rabmacd » Wed Dec 26, 2007 3:28 pm

Juan Face's post about the Hal Holbrook performance in "Into the Wild" reminded me of some people, who in my opinion were deserving of Oscars, but didn't get them. The Academy doesn't always get it right. Not in Gallowhill Road anyway.

Tom Cruise missed out on Best Supporting Actor in Rain Man. I thought he was so much better than Dustin Hoffman. The way he took the character from hard boiled imported car salesman, to caring brother, was a great piece of acting

Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction---what a performance.

Martin Scorsese--Goodfellas--how he didn't win is beyond me and will always be.

I've always thought that Spielberg should have got the Oscar for The Color Purple, ok it WAS a blatant attempt to get one, but it still should have won.
OOH did they knock down McCaigs folly.....

Pacino in the Godfather

Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction---what a performance.

I think Gary Sinise also had a hell of a perfromance that year as Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump.

Should've been Oscars:

Sean Penn - I Am Sam (Actor)
Sean Penn - 21 Grams (Actor)
Sean Penn - Sweet and Lowdown (Actor)
Sean Penn - Dead Man Walking (Supporting Actor)
Sean Penn - Carlito's Way (Supporting Actor)

Slightly one-sided I suppose  but in Scorcese-like fashion, they gave him an Oscar for Mystic River, and his performance, although good, doesn't come close to I Am Sam. He was beaten to an Oscar that year by Denzel Washington for Training Day  Watch the two films - make up your own mind :?

If anyone hasn't seen I Am Sam, then it's "Rain Man" meets "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" type film - would recommend to anyone, but make sure you've got a box of tissues ready for moppin up the tears

Denzel is the balls in Training Day. No Way I would not give him an oscar for that.

Agree with Sheik! Sean Penn is an excellent actor and one of my favorites, along with Russell Crowe, also an excellent actor who should have a few more awards.

Think probably the biggest disgrace from the Academy was that Ennio Morricone never won an oscar for any of his soundtracks, a number of which are amongst the greatest soundtracks to movies ever.

Then the sheer hypocrisy last year to hand him an oscar for lifetime acheivement !!!!!

Always wanted to do this

Davie get back on thread--start up an Ennio Morricone thread of your own :D

Ennio must have written the most easily recognisable music in any of the films I've seen.

Love all of his music-- especially,The Mission.

Some of the acting in "campbeltown the movie" was tremendous but the young folk never even got mentioned for oscars!
How many mothers to cry?
How many sons have to die?
How many missions left to fly over palestine?
