Scotland’s Music, and John Martyn

Have your say....

Mary G. - Got the book!

Haven't had time to get into it yet, being that time of the year when you seem to have more things to do when you're on holiday than when
you're working, if you know what I mean.
Had a quick skim through the early chapters though, and Kintyre does get mentioned. One thing puzzling me...who the heck was the "white
witch of Gigha"?

Heard some John Martyn tonight, very good. Apparently I heard it this time last year as well but I can't remember. Check out Pete's mate Finlay as well, deadly. I'll find out some info about him at a more sober juncture.

That's the one I was on about. George and Ship in a Bottle in particular 8)

The guy Findlay Napier I was referring to is also in Back of the Moon, who've played at the music festival before.

Ranald. Thanks for that link, there's some really good stuff on there!

For anyone unfamiliar with John Martyn's stuff I'd recommend starting with the classic "Solid Air" album. It still does it for me, when I'm in that
frame of mind.

John Martyn: RIP

Postby Mary G » Thu Jan 29, 2009 2:43 pm

Sad news from his website:

John Martyn 11th September 1948 - 29th January 2009

With heavy heart and an unbearable sense of loss we must announce that John died this morning.

Can't say I care "passionately" for a lot of John Martyn's work ... although some of it borders on GENIUS.

He was certainly an inspiration to many, and unique.

Never overly commercial, he walked (and latterly wheeled) his own path ... and is a great loss ... RIP & thanks for the music ....

On BBC 4 now - brilliant programme - a real education for those who want to learn more about him. On i-player soon too, no doubt.

Enjoy :D

I see from the paper today there is something on BBC4 tonight at 9pm - maybe a repeat of what MaryG saw on Friday night.
