Have your say....

Postby Rabmacd » Sun Jul 15, 2007 12:46 pm

1. Killer Queen - Queen
2. Sonnet - The Verve
3. Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon
4. Sweet Child of Mine - G & R
5. (This one's for Bill) When The Man Comes Around - J R Cash

Tomorrow, I'll probably have a different set. But Killer Queen will still be my number 1

was going to poo poo that last five till i got to no. 5, a truely classic track, recently used on one of those zombie re-issues, dawn of the dead?

on par with "i hurt myself today" "when the man comes around" is such a humungous song, perfect in every way, lyric, melody, tune, sentiment, it hangs over you like a vulture ready to pluck your very soul from your body

ok so thats p!sh but i do love that song, i'd forgotten it from my childhood (i knew every word of the san quenton album at the age of 8) till i heard it on that zombie flick

ok, killer queen is quite good too, wanted to be one when i was ten, a singer, a singer!!!!!!

dirty minded lot!!!!

I've not heard the Cash version but the original is a cracking song, Trent Reznor at his best.

It's definitely one of the most powerful videos ever. Strangely enough it's mainly men it seems to bring to tears, most women I've spoken to about it think it's just an old man singing a sad song

Anyway I'm, sure I heard the Thread Police on their way along the corridor.

PS. great choices Rab.

It's certainly a moving video and without wishing to put down the man in black his performance is nowhere near as powerful as the NIN version.
My favourite version has to be the one with Bowie joining NIN on stage to do the vocals, I think it was at his 50th birthday party, but I'm a bit of a sucker for the Jones boy anyway.

PS. Tosh - this highlighed a catastrophic ommission from my top 5 albums - Pretty Hate Machine!

The thing you have to remember Tosh is that here is a guy who knows he has only a short while to live, and looking at the video, the viewer knows it as well.

Trent Reznor on Johnny Cash's "Hurt"

"By the end I was really on the verge of tears. At the end of it, there was just dead silence. There was, like, this moist clearing of our throats and then, 'Uh, okay, let's get some coffee."

Bill, I live about 20mins South of Port Richey, where the man himself often came to visit his inlaws.

And Ring of Fire is a favourite of my 5 yr olds.

Aye, i understand where Cash was (as much as you can without being in that position yourself) and the video rightly won awards but if you take the song without that context and listen to the various versions without strings attached then it's a different kettle of fish entirely.

Much also depends on context too, the original is the part of a concept album and anyone who has hear The Downward Spiral will likely always see it as the climax of that concept.
