It's only March and....

It's only March and....

The bodies are piling up.

Original Yes guitarist Peter Banks died Thursday in his home in London. The musician's website listed his cause of death as heart failure and said he was found after failing to appear for a recording session. He was 65.

Banks, who had previously played with bassist Chris Squire in The Syn, was part of the lineup that recorded the group's first two albums, 1969's Yes and 1970's Time and a Word. He was asked to leave the group before the release of Time and a Word and was replaced by Steve Howe.

After Yes, Banks formed the groups Flash and Empire and released several solo albums. According to Rolling Stone, he was working on a live collection at the time of his death.

Yes, which is on tour now in the USA, released a statement: "We are deeply saddened to learn about the passing of fellow bandmate and founding Yes member Peter Banks. He was a huge piece of the fabric that made Yes what it is, and our thoughts, sincere condolences, and prayers are with him and his family. Peter, we shall miss you greatly."

No! Yes were the biggest part of my late teenage years (along with Genesis) - my husband and I saw them several times in concert but probably Banks had left by the time I was REALLY into them. We still have all the original LPs with the brilliant artwork. Strange, I only heard someone on the radio last month - I think it was Danny Baker - say how important Peter Banks was to progressive music.

I must confess to buying some of their albums for the artwork and not the music.

I didn't know Ian Campbell had gone.
Might as well add Kevin Ayers and Clive Burr to that list.

Quite rightly so, he was well respected and influential. The Ian Campbell Folk Group spawned at least two members of Fairport Convention.

I wonder how may of those listed here http://www.deathlist.net/ will see the year out. Some of the ages surprised me.

Bill, being as you mentioned Kenny Ball, I was first introduced to him in the early seventies when my dad bought his live album - Have A Drink On Me.
It contained the wonderful Ten Thousand Years Ago which featured lines such as....

The was a young girl on the grass
Who had an enormous great ass
It was not round and pink as you may think
It was grey, had long ears and ate grass

There was a young lady from Onga
Who had an affair with a Conga (eel that is)
When an old man from Deal said, "How did it feel ?"
She said, "Just like yours but much longer"

I still have that album.

Martin, I was brought up on that music too but I never rated Bilk even though I played 'Stranger' in my school orchestra many times (I hated Kenny Ball even more, mind you). I once saw him in concert and he said something about how the song was for his daughter or wife I think. Perhaps I was too traditional but give me the King of Swing, Benny Goodman any day!

GG, there's nowt wrong with a bit of Goodman. I've never been a big fan of Bilk except for Aria, it was one of the songs I had played at my Mum's funeral as she always liked it.

Sorry Martin I was getting my Bilks and Balls mixed up there!!!! :<> Oops! Bilk is still with us

Still, my thoughts are the same, just meant that I didn't rate Kenny Ball or even Acker Bilk BUT you are right, that track is a good 'un!
