Most vitriolic song ever?

Have your say....

Most vitriolic song ever?

Postby Govangirl » Fri Aug 13, 2010 10:12 pm

In recognition of a great Socialist gone from this world, here's Costello's famous and bitter lament. Strong, yes but dripping with righteous anger:

Is there a more bitter song?
Blow away the dreams that tear you apart
Blow away the dreams that break your heart
Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted

It puts me in mind of Stevie Wonder's "Isn't she Lovey" 8)
I know my Summer'll never come
I know I'll cry until my dying day has come
Let the Winter roll along
I've got nothing left but song

Perhaps you both know the answer to this (I don't, and I couldn't make out from Bill's smiley if he did or not :? ) but, I'm assuming Mr Costello chose that melody to be ironic, did he? If not, then I'm sure Stevie's lawyers would have been on the phone by now :D

Went to see him live at the Concert Hall in Glasgow about 12 years ago. At the end of the night he asked for silence for one last song. He switched everything off, walked right to the end of the stage and sang totally unsupported, no microphone, no guitar, no piano, absolutely nothing but his bare voice. You could hear a pin drop, and the acoustics were fantastic. Never seen anyone do that before, and doubt I ever will again. He made Mrs Sheik cry that night! Fantastic live performer.

Just for you GG

 I've been listening to that song for years and never realised once that the melody was based on that! But hey, interesting in that it adds a melancholic, ironic note to it.

I was a tad confused at whether you meant Elvis or Stevie Sheik  but I take it now it's the genius who is the former. Did he sing Shipbuilding when you saw him?

That clip is FANTASTIC! Mr Govangirl will love it being a big Clash fan (and Elvis and Bruce and Dave) but what was the ocassion? I can't believe I missed that - was it some sort of tribute to Strummer or was it a festival that they were all at? The Boss looks fabulous too, doesn't he Ags?

It was at the Grammy's after Joe Strummer died. Not a bad old line-up, and Miami Steve thrown in for good measure

I'm prety sure he sang shipbuilding that night, it was just him and Steve Nieve on stage.

Bill, given your postings on another thread I assume you definitely won't be there to tramp the dirt down. Perhps you'll be there with a big stick to beat off the trampers :D

Your mention of Joe Strummer obviously brings to mind The Clash and The Pogues, but also this duet of the Bob Marley classic

Sorry, but I believe there to be many metal songs that have more bile and vitriol in one chord than any of these songs as a whole. Just by the nature of the genre, you see.

Good to have you back from your hibernation Horse
I was actually thinking about vitriolic AND enjoyable!!!!!
Saying that, my son is a metal fan and I heard a halfway decent song emanating from the pit he calls a bedroom. It was James Hetfield actually crooning a bit of a ballad so maybe not all vitriolic????

This one about the Thatcher years,"Ordinary Man" written by Peter Hames and sung by the great Christy Moore is a classic .

The verse in my signature is from a Christy Moore song.

On your own,ride on Christy!

I agree Tosh but probably the Grand Master of vitriol is this man:

Blow away the dreams that tear you apart
Blow away the dreams that break your heart
Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted
