Quite appropriate that today I finished reading The Forgotten Highlander. The story of Alistair Urquhart, from a nineteen year old conscript in 1939 to his return home to Aberdeen in November 1945. From the fall of Singapore to the hell of the Japanese death railway, only to be torpedoed by an American submarine while being transported as a slave to the Japanese mainland.Through out his ordeal he suffered at the hands of the sadistic Japanese guards, and was struck by every possible life threatening tropical disease, only to survive and return home to be treated despicably by the army.
Not a book to be enjoyed, but to wonder at mans will to survive the worst atrocities.
Alistair is now 91 and living in sheltered accommodation in Scotland.
