Same colours as the Saltire? Or is that too obvious?

How about an ongoing Scottish football trivia quiz? First to get a question right gets to ask the next question, or something like that?

Back in 1234, King George , suggested that Scotland should have a New flag as with Wales and Ireland.
A member of the Kings servants was dispacthed from London on foot to Edinburgh too give the news to the Duke of Edinburgh, offering the suggestion from the King.
After almost 6 weeks of walking, the courier arrived at Edinburgh castle.
He was barely alive and suffering from hypothermia, he had left London in the warm summer month of May, and had arrived in the cold winter month of July in Scotland.
He was not clothed for such a cold climate and while lying on his death bed he tried to mutter the message he was sent to deliver.
With chittering teeth he spoke the words blue with the cold, Scotland and flag.
The Dukes aids came to the conclusion that they had to design a Blue Scottish flag.

This tale which is part of our history has slightly changed throughout the years, but the above is as near the truth as you will get.
Unless someone else knows better.

They play in these colours as it was the colours of the Queens Park team, who represented Scotland in the first international.

Yip - that was what they're saying at Hampden museum - they borrowed the strips (and the players) from Queens Park.

Did they though?, even back then they played in black and white hoops, there are pictures of them after winning the first Scottish Cup in 1874 wearing the traditional Spiders kit, not sure where the Navy blue kit came from, I don't suppose away kits existed then ;-)
Interestingly the old hooped kit had a lion rampant badge which is mentioned as being part of that original Scotland strip.

From the Queens Park web site:-

It organised and administered the first international meeting between Scotland and England under association rules - and indeed it was Queen’s Park who supplied the entire Scottish side on that very first meeting on 30th November 1872.
The Scottish side wore their club jerseys for that international which was then dark blue in colour, the same dark blue as worn today by the national team. More than 4000 spectators watched the sides play out a 0-0 draw on St Andrew’s Day.

The black and white hoops were first worn on 25th October 1873, 135 years ago today
