:? :? :? I'm totally confused now. I didn't think it was an argument for independence, just the idea of a separate Scottish team in the Olympics so although I agree with all these previous posts, I still think Mary's quote was great!!!!!!

And regarding Sean Connery, I think you're trying to wind me up Emdee. I've had to take TWO Evening Oil Primrose tablets the night!

Only by implication, Govangirl. The SNP regularly float things - like this idea for a separate Scotland Olympic team - that they think will appeal to people. Then they imply that it is only achievable if we have independence ... which may or may not be the case. Because these things get churned out so regularly, we are inured to them as thinly veiled separatist petitions.

As for big Tam ... there are many others that I would pick ahead of him to be a Scottish Ambassador; but he's still my favourite James Bond ;-)

If Scotland had competed at the Olympics as an independent nation they would have finished in 34th position in the medal table.

Remembering that two of the medals won by Scots would have to be forfeit, as they were won in team events with the hated English as team mates.

So we would be sitting in the table behind Thailand/Mongolia/Kazakhstan and other sporting super powers.

My mistake, should have been Thailand and not Taiwan.

Very interesting Bill – good research! Should have thought to do that myself ...

I take it that the two forfeits are the women’s fours in rowing, led by Kath Grainger from Aberdeen, and the men’s team sprint in cycling, with Chris Hoy. Is that right?

Actually its RUBBISH research
Asuming you are right with Scotland finishing 34th

Kazakhstan 35th

Mongolia 45th

Taiwan 78th

maybe not super powers but well recognised sporting nations,
Scotland would be ahead of Bulgaria 41st, Finland 43rd,Portugal 45th, Sweden 56th, Greece 59th,South Africa 70th,

Hey John A, careful or you will need some of Govangirl's primrose oil tablets ;-)

According to the BBC website medal table http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympic ... efault.stm, Kazakhstan and Mongolia were indeed above position 34, at 29 and 31 respectively. I suspect Bill meant to type Thailand, and not Taiwan; the Thais finished in 32nd place, while Taiwan (or Chinese Taipei as the Chinese like to call it) was indeed much further down, at 80 according to the BBC.

Your figures look different John? I am not doubting that you are quoting faithfully, but wonder where they came from.

Cheers, M

Not being a football fan I wouldn’t be able to give an opinion on this, but does the above discussion imply that if there was a unified Team GB in the World Cup, would Scotland, and indeed England (let’s not forget Wales), be able to get a better result?

Right thats the last time I believe The Herald  as it was their final table I quoted from which is obviously totally wrong.

But my other point about Scotland finishing ahead of Bulgaria 42nd, Finland 44th,Portugal 46th, Sweden 56th, Greece 59th,South Africa 71st,still stands.

Why do we always have to look at the downside Bill? you went for the glass half empty by highlighting Kazakhstan
Mongolia &Taiwan. I would rather look at it as half full by highlighting Scotland being above Bulgaria, Sweden etc..
