sad to hear , but if the goverment have their way and keep puting the price of drink up they will put the whole drinks industry in britain out of buisness.

Perhaps bad management (top level) as opposed to increased prices? It is the pubs who are being hit the worst so more people in theory are buying drink from off licences? (but probably doing this at the supermarkets)

It really is a bad sign when you see the offies start closing. Victoria Wine are a big enough franchise that they ought to be able to compete against Tesco and the other supermarkets.

On the other hand there are many who thinks this is a bad thing. The demand for alcohol will never demise and by increasing the price in public house the purchase of carry outs is increasing. With this comes uncontrolled drinking of alcohol behind closed doors.

Fully understand your point but the new licence laws and increased prices do nothing to control abuse of alcohol. In fact in many ways it increases alcohol abuse. People now buy alcohol on mass and have more alcohol in their homes than ever. At least licenced public houses can control the issues and problems. Its an interesting debate but for some reason the Government missed out speaking to the publicans on this and seem to play into the hands of the supermarkets...!

There are many who think that this wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

And that is precisely what's wrong with Britain today. Instead of living their own lives, there are far too many people who know "what's best" for everyone else. (a generalism, not directed at WC1)

The biggest loss here will be pubs. Gathering places where people can physically interact. Alcohol (per unit) is one of the only things which has gone down in price, yet pubs have been priced (and buerocracised) out of the game. Off-licences look set to follow, thus giving the supermarkets a monopoly. This is a clear case of selective prohibition which has nothing to do with the consumption of alcohol; more in the short term boosting supermarket profits; and longer term, social engineering.

Ah the old reliable source :lol:

Have heard a few definately true rumours about Victoria Wine some of them quite funny.

It is true that Greggs are interested in some of the 1300 stores that FQR had.
Bargain Booze, EFB Retail and some supermarkets also showed interest in some of the stores, but nothing confirmed about any new owner.
So far KPMG the administrators have only managed to sell 20 of the 1300 stores.

The closing down sale will begin on Tuesday 1st December with the store scheduled to close on the 20th of December or earlier.

You had better be quick and get in and grab some bargains

They would have trouble selling the Campbeltown shop seeing as they dont own it - they lease it!

First Quench sold off the store premises long ago, which is why earlier in the year they tried to renegotiate the rent on around 400 stores to keep them open.

What the administrators were offering for sale were the remainder of the lease, stock, shop fittings and any of the many trading names owned by First Quench Retailing.
At 1.00 p.m on Thursday 26th November there was 2 bidders still interested in parts of the business. Their offers were rejeted by the administrators as being to low.

Shop stocks are now so low the only option is to begin closing down sales in all stores.
Empty shops may now be more attractive option to any buyers. All they need to acquire is the lease and
the premises licence (if it was still an off licence)
