Scotland's Minister of Environment Recognizes Machrihanish Dunes For Work with Scottish Natural Heritage in Creating the ‘Most Natural Golf Course'
Scotland's Roseanna Cunningham, Minister of the Environment, recently praised Machrihanish Dunes in a speech she gave at the Scottish Natural Heritage & Scotland's Environmental and Rural Services (SEARS) Conference called ‘The Changing Nature of Scotland." In that speech, Minister Cunningham began by pointing out that "there are links between our economy and our environment and our attitudes towards it.. and that the environment and the economy are not separate systems – they are interdependent."
Minister Cunningham went on to praise Machrihanish Dunes, a Southworth Development property, for its commitment to Scottish Natural Heritage. "Much of Scotland's natural environment underpins the economy," she said. "The recently opened Machrihanish Dunes golf course, near Campbeltown is a good example where entrepreneurship does not have to be at the cost of the environment. The developers involved Scottish Natural Heritage from the outset in order to build the most natural golf course with the least environmental impact."
Though Machrihanish was built in a way that mirrors how golf began, it may also be the first clear look at the golf course of the future. Fully sustainable, rugged, raw, and beautiful, Machrihanish Dunes co-exists with the land to actually improve the quality of the environment.
This unmatched respect for the natural environment sets Machrihanish Dunes apart from any course that has preceded it. It serves as a model for what responsible stewardship of the land is all about. And it allows the course to exist as its own entity, growing and changing with the land to provide an ever-better golfing experience. Here, as we are recreating history, we are also making it.
