Kintyre Piping Society Junior Competition

Postby Admin3 » Tue May 17, 2005 5:09 pm

Fiona Mitchell & Fraser Wylie are tops in Kintyre.

They came from far and wide to Campbeltown last weekend for the Kintyre Piping Society’s Annual Junior Piping and Drumming Championships. The event, held in the Argyll Arms Hotel and the Town Hall attracted a total of 120 young pipers, drummers and chanter players from all parts of Scotland and Ireland.

But at the end of an intense day of wall to wall piping and drumming top trumps were Campbeltown’s own Fiona Mitchell and Fraser Wylie. They each went home with a clutch of trophies including, for Fiona, the Pipe Major Ronald MacCallum Shield as Junior Champion and, for Fraser, the McCallum Memorial Cup as Senior Champion. Fraser Wylie was also awarded the John D. Burgess Medal as piper with most points overall on the day.

Both Fiona Mitchell and Fraser Wylie are members of the renowned Kintyre Schools Pipe Band led by their tutor Pipe Major Ian McKerral. They also get the odd Piobaireachd lesson from World Champion, Willie McCallum, and, in Fiona’s case regular tuition from Pipe Major Jim Henderson (otherwise known as “the Catch from Cowal”).

Thirteen years old Fiona, who is in Second Year at Campbeltown Grammar School, claimed a total of 3 first places in the Under 15 years events, where she was up against 25 other entrants from all parts. For Fiona, it was the icing on the cake following a string of more modest achievements over a 6 month period, starting with success at the Mod in Perth last October and her consequent solo performance on BBC Scotland Television.

In the 15 to 17 years Section, Fraser was placed first in all but one of his six events. He was Runner-Up to Struan Thorpe of Lochgilphead in the 2 X 2/4 Marches. “Everything just went right,” said 16 years old Fraser. “I hit a purple patch today and I just didn’t make mistakes. I was lucky as everyone else was playing pretty well too. I just hope I havn’t been spending too much time on the pipes with my Highers starting this week.”

There were a couple of other notable local successes, with Stuart McConnachie being placed First in the 12 to 14 years Chanter event, and Sarah Muir also coming in First in the Under 15 years Piobaireachd Ground Event.

There was a tremendous atmosphere in the packed Argyll Hotel Function Room as the concluding Hornpipes and Jigs were played out. At the end of the day, before the prize-giving, the Senior judge, Pipe Major Angus John MacLellan paid tribute to the work of all the young players and their tutors. He also recognised the support from all the parents in ensuring that talented children are afforded every opportunity to go far in piping and drumming. Willie McCallum Senior summed up with a Vote of Thanks , referring particularly to the work put in by the12 judges, Angus J MacLellan, William McCallum Junior, Robert Stewart, Lorne Cousin, Lorne MacDougall, Peter Hunt, Jean Morrison, Ronald McShannon, Bruce Campbell, Brian McComish, Angus MacColl and John Morrans. Mr McCallum thanked the stewards and his hard working committee who were on the go all day ensuring the smooth running of some 300 individual performances with scarcely a hitch. He also thanked Argyll & Bute Council for the facility at The Town Hall and the proprietors and patrons of the Argyll Arms Hotel for cheerfully putting up with a huge amount of disruption all day.
