Three-weekly household collection service to be introduced

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Wed Jul 06, 2016 11:07 pm

Heard about this before and council employees were saying it will be introduced in Campbeltown but wondered how as there is no Council re-cycling scheme. No mention of Campbeltown on this so does anyone know anything more??

Argyll and Bute Council puts recycling first – new refuse and recycling collection service to be introduced

Argyll and Bute Council today agreed its service procedures ahead of the introduction of a three-weekly household waste collection service which puts recycling first.

Councillor Ellen Morton, Policy Lead for Roads and Amenity Services, said: “Argyll and Bute Council is totally committed to recycling and despite our drastically reduced funding, we have protected recycling services. We will continue to uplift your blue (recycling) bin every two weeks and will continue to provide recycling centres.
“For people who use a recycling bag, the service will stay the same, as will the arrangements for people with food caddies and glass bins, meaning these will still be collected every two weeks.
“We’re moving to the new system for your green (general waste) bin, collecting it every three weeks. We have seen a sharp rise in recycling since we introduced the blue bin collection service for most of the area last year, but even more can be done. There are still a lot of things people put in their green bin which could easily go in the blue bin.
“You can recycle more than you think. Recycling saves space in your green bin and saves money for council services. For every tonne of waste we put to landfill we have to pay a tax of around £80.
“Another good way to recycle and save space in your bin is home composting. Again it’s easy to do, and is a good way to reuse your garden and uncooked vegetable waste. There is lots of helpful advice on home composting on our website at: www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/content/home-composting-advice
“By recycling more – by taking time to put more of your recyclable waste into your blue bin, rather than in the general household waste bin – you will be helping the council save money in the future, money which can be spent on essential public services, as well as helping to save the planet’s natural resources, save energy and reduce the effects of climate change.
“We are currently finalising the implementation plans and residents will be receiving detailed information through your door in the coming months. Please look out for it, as well the information on the Council website, the local press and social media.”

Re: Three-weekly household collection service to be introduc

One of our councillors talked about this at the local Community Council meeting.

Our recycling via the plastic bags will stay just the same, every two weeks, and no glass. Still being done by Kintyre Recycling. People asked if we could have bins to store our recycling, since there was a hope more would be getting recycled in the future with less room in our landfill bins.

Apparently everywhere else has been on 2-weekly bin collection for a while, so moving to 3-weekly is expected to be a bit of a shock. It costs something like £80 for every tonne of things sent to landfill so the more we recycle, the less money we waste on landfill.

I think he said it will be starting in the autumn, so if you've been planning to have a clear-out for ages, now would be a good time to do it. I've started mine.

This is going ahead sooner and Kintyre first!!

Recycling services will be increased when the new three weekly general waste collection service begins from Monday 3 October in Kintyre and on Mull, Islay, Jura and Bute; 31 October 2016 in Helensburgh, Lomond and Mid-Argyll; and from 28 November 2016 in Oban, Lorn and Cowal and on Lismore, Tiree, Coll and Colonsay.

Households that currently have a blue recycling bin can request a second bin, and homes with recycling bags can request additional bags.

Argyll and Bute Council has made arrangements to increase recycling services, to help households move to a three-weekly general waste collection, meet national recycling targets, and save money for council services.
Recycling waste will continue to be uplifted every two weeks while green (general waste) bins will be collected every three weeks.

Householders will soon receive a calendar of collection dates so that they know exactly when their waste will be uplifted.
Councillor Ellen Morton, Policy Lead for Amenity Services, said:

“Recycling more will save space for general waste in green bins and it will save money for council services. For every tonne of waste that goes to landfill the council has to pay over £80 tax, which means about £2.6 million in total. The more we can recycle the more we can save.

“Funding for our council services has reduced significantly. We must change how we do things so we can continue to provide a wide range of services. Like all local authorities we must work with our residents to meet national targets for reducing waste. The new arrangements for collecting refuse help meet both these challenges.

“The more we reduce the amount of general waste we send to landfill, the more we can save, so we would say to everyone, please avoid wasting money on waste – recycle.”

Reducing waste can also save money for householders - figures show that every household in Scotland could save £460 a year by throwing away less food.

Arrangements can be made for certain households to have a second general waste green bin – where there are five or more people, where someone has a medical condition that generates waste, or where families have children using nappies and all recycling options have been considered.

The Council is working to ensure disruption to the service is kept to a minimum during the transition. Environmental wardens will be available to provide advice on making best use of recycling options.

Waste can also be taken to any of the Council’s civic amenity sites. Locations are listed on the Council website – www.argyll-bute.gov.uk

Further information will be provided with the waste calendars, and is also available on www.argyll-bute/gov.uk/bins.
To request additional recycling bins or bags, contact an Environmental Warden, or find out about a second general waste bin if you qualify for one, please call 01546 605514.
