Argyll and Bute Council carries out vital work to protect Crossaig Bridge in Kintyre

Argyll and Bute Council’s bridge squad has this week carried out vital work to protect and restore Crossaig Bridge on the B842.

Following a scheduled two-yearly bridge inspection it was found that the bridge was damaged. In the interests of public safety the road was closed to allow the necessary repair works to be carried out.

The wall which protects the base of the bridge from water ingress had been washed away, meaning the base of the bridge had become unstable. The support above the arch had also been affected by water.

The road was closed last Thursday (28th January), with the work programme prepared on the Friday and five cubic metres of concrete poured into the base of the bridge on Saturday morning.

The protective walls were then rebuilt, with the road remaining closed until this morning (Thursday 4th February) to allow the works to strengthen.

Policy Lead for Roads and Amenity Services, Councillor Ellen Morton, said: ‘’As soon as it was highlighted that there was a problem our bridge squad deployed swiftly to protect public safety.

‘’This was a complex job and the team did very well to have the bridge fully reinstated and the road re-opened within a week. Well done to them for carrying out such complicated work so quickly and effectively.

‘’Of course there was some travel disruption with the road being closed so we would thank people for their patience while the vital work took place.

‘’Bridges are key pieces of our 1400 mile road network and we are committed to addressing any problems swiftly, keeping our communities safely connected.’’
