Argyll and Bute Council officially launching the new Campbeltown CARS project

£2.2million boost for the historic town centre will protect 70 jobs

Scheme runs to 2020

Drop-in event on Friday 18th September from 12noon to 3pm at 3 Harvey’s Lane, Burnside Square

Argyll and Bute Council is about to begin the third stage in the regeneration of Campbeltown with a new £2.2million project to repair town centre buildings.

People in and around Campbeltown are invited to come along to the event to find out more about the plans for the future of the town.

South Kintyre Councillor Rory Colville, Chair of the Area Committee, encouraged people to come along to the event, saying: ‘’This scheme will see our regeneration initiative continue for another five years, building on the great work in the last seven, which has significantly improved the appearance of the town and had real tangible benefits– safeguarding jobs and creating the right conditions for businesses to thrive.

‘’Community based regeneration projects are a key part of our constant drive to improve our towns, making them places that people can be proud of and that, crucially, create the correct environment for economic growth, which means secure and well-paying jobs.

‘’We would invite anyone with an interest to come along to the event and learn more about the scheme from the project team.’’

The council will be targeting properties in and around Main Street and Longrow South, including the replacement of the decked areas in the rear of courtyard tenements, which have been causing significant problems for a number of years.
Safeguarding the future of these properties, both commercial and residential, will protect over 70 jobs, from people working in the repaired shops to local tradesmen carrying out the improvement works. Businesses which could benefit include traditional businesses such as local florists, the fishmonger and the butcher shop.

There will also be a small grant scheme for repairs such as roofing, leadwork, gutters, windows and doors.
If you are unable to make the event but are interested in the project please call 01586 559048 for more information.

Notes

Conservation area regeneration scheme (CARS) is a Historic Scotland funded scheme which provides financial assistance, over a five year period, for Conservation Area based regeneration and conservation initiatives undertaken by Local and National Park Authorities, community groups and other 3rd sector organisations experienced in delivering multi-funded projects.
This is the third council led regeneration scheme in Campbeltown following on from the first CARS from 2007 to 2012 and the Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI from 2009 to 2015.
