Campbeltown Grammar has picked up BADMINTONscotland’s School of the Month Award for April, in recognition of its excellent school badminton programme.

The BADMINTONscotland School of the Month Award was introduced to recognise the commitment and achievements of primary and secondary schools which take part in badminton initiatives at grassroots level in Scotland. Each month BADMINTONscotland rewards one school which has excelled in delivering badminton to pupils through various initiatives including Primary Curriculum for Excellence, Secondary PE Teaching weeks, Primary Festivals and Sportshall Challenges.

BADMINTONscotland was particularly impressed by the commitment shown by the school to promoting the sport. This came in many different forms including badminton being available to all pupils as part of the curriculum from S1 core PE to Advanced Higher including National 4 & 5.

Great dedication is also shown from Alison Millar who is a Pupil Support Teacher at the school. Mrs Millar runs lunchtime badminton clubs from September through to Easter on every day of the week with exception of Fridays. The clubs, which are available to different year groups on different days, are always extremely well attended.

Perhaps the greatest commitment of all shown by Campbeltown Grammar is their willingness to travel long distances to take part in various schools’ competitions which provide pupils with further opportunities to play competitive badminton. In addition to the in-school inter-house badminton competitions which are organised by Mrs Millar and the PE Departments, Campbeltown Grammar School also participates in competitions with other schools including SSBU regional competitions in the Argyll and Bute Area.

Dawn Middleton, Coaching & Development Manager at BADMINTONscotland said, “Campbeltown Grammar is a deserving winner of this award, with 40 pupils regularly involved in the various clubs. The school is a splendid example of full commitment to badminton, with sports leadership students, curricular PE and co-curricular clubs. Congratulations to all involved.”
