Absolute beginners? Research your family history at Campbeltown and Lochgilphead libraries

Campbeltown and Lochgilphead libraries are hosting free one-to-one taster sessions for people interested in researching their family history.

For anyone with Scottish ancestors the best place to start is with the Scotland’s People website which holds around 90 million records including births, deaths, marriages and census records.

However, for those who are just starting out and don’t know where to begin, a session with a trained member of staff at the library will help get them on their way on the website.

Argyll and Bute Council’s Policy Lead for Community and Culture, Councillor Robin Currie, said, “The interest in researching family history is very keen in Argyll and Bute and the library service has recognised this. By helping people get started in their research we are giving them the skills to go further on their own.

“Sessions at Rothesay, Oban and Dunoon were fully booked and we are hoping the interest will be the same in Campbeltown and Lochgilphead. These sessions are for absolute beginners in researching family history, and all we ask is that participants come along with some names and birth dates, possibly marriage dates, which gives a start point.”

The session at Campbeltown Library will be held on Thursday 13 February, and at Lochgilphead Library on Wednesday 19 February.
