New water mains near Campbeltown

Scottish Water has completed a major project to improve services to customers in the Peninver area near Campbeltown.

The £900,000 investment, which takes Scottish Water’s recent investment in the Campbeltown area to about £24m, is providing greater security of supply and improved water quality to customers in the Peninver area following the installation of about 3.4 miles of new water mains stretching from Campbeltown to Peninver.

The new mains has enabled Scottish Water to close the Peninver WTW and provide customers in the area with water from Campbeltown Water Treatment Works (WTW), the same source as most customers in the area.

Paul Morley, Scottish Water’s water operations team manager, said: “We are committed to providing the best possible service to all of our customers and we are delighted to have completed another important project in the Campbeltown area which has further improved our infrastructure there.

“This project, which follows completion of our massive waste water system upgrade in Campbeltown earlier in 2012, has enabled us to close the Peninver WTW and main out to the area from Campbeltown WTW.

“This means customers in the Peninver area are now also served by the Campbeltown WTW.

Mrs Jane McKenzie, Scottish Water’s regional community manager, said: “Most of this work involved the installation of a new water main from the edge of Campbeltown, along the route of the B842 to Peninver.

“The completion of the project means that customers in the Peninver area are now less likely to be affected by burst mains and disruption to supply. They are also receiving clearer, fresher drinking water because of the replacement of old pipes with new.

“The work involved some pipe bursting and relining of existing pipes in Peninver.

“Some road traffic management was required but we did everything possible to minimise any disruption to local customers and road-users and we thank them for their patience and understanding.

Scottish Water is aware of an issue with low water pressure affecting four properties in the High Askomil area and is to take measures to tackle the issue.

The project, which started last summer, was carried out by contractors Morrison for Scottish Water Solutions, the project delivery arm of Scottish Water which includes some of the world’s largest engineering and construction companies.

Last year, Scottish Water completed a massive environmental improvement project to provide Campbeltown with a 21st century waste water system.

The £23m scheme, one of the biggest of its kind ever carried out in Argyll and Bute, delivered a modern, state-of-the-art waste water system after upgrading key parts of Scottish Water’s infrastructure in the town.

The new scheme is now helping to protect the environment in Campbeltown Loch by reducing the frequency of discharges of storm water in storm conditions, in compliance with consents from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

It has also substantially reduced the risk of flooding to properties in the town and enabled 23 to be removed from the register of those at risk of flooding.
