A83 Closed due to landslide - again!

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Thu Oct 03, 2013 9:01 am

A83 closed again due to landslide at Cairndow - diversions in place. Just after 7am a landslide closed the A83 in both directions.

Information on the landslip is currently contradictory but it would seem that it is not at Rest and Be Thankful but between Dundarave Point and Clachan of Cairndow – with traffic coming out of Cowal on the A815 affected if it is headed for Oban or Kintyre.

Diversions are:

Westbound :Turn right onto the A82 at Tarbet and follow the road until Crianlarich – Turn left onto A82 and continue until Tyndrum – Turn left onto the A85 and continue until Dalmally – Turn left onto A819 and follow the road until Inveraray. Thereafter follow permanent signing.
Eastbound: At Inveraray, turn left onto the A819 then follow the road until Dalmally – Turn right onto the A85 and continue until Tyndrum – Turn right onto the A82 and follow the road to Crianlarich – Turn right onto A82 and follow the road until Tarbet.

Actually the landslip is between the Dunoon turn off and Butterbridge not along from Cairndow as report this morning - more details

Update 09.12: Police Scotland at Lochgilphead have issued the following statement:

At 6.55am on 3/10/13 a report was made to police of a landslide on the A83 near to the Rest and Be Thankful. Police and Bear Scotland are at the locus now and making necessary assessments.

It is estimated that approx 80 tonnes of hillside has come down in a new locus to previous incidents. This landslide is approx 2 miles north of the junction of the A83 and A815 (Dunoon Road) between this junction and Butterbridge.

Bear Scotland believe that the road will be closed for at least the rest of today. Diversions are in place.

Update 11.00: The volume of the landslip is now said to be around 100 tonnes – but this is a modest influx so prolonged closure of this vital road is not likely.

Update 13.00: BEAR Scotland have just issued the following summary and position statement:

Current status

At around 7.30am a slip occurred affecting the A83 between A815 and B828 Kinglass (1.8 miles north of the Dunoon junction)
An estimated 100 tonnes of debris that is affecting the carriageway
Overnight there was 26.4ml of rainfall in the area (with 17.6ml of that between 6am and 9am)
Forecast from Met Office is for heavy rain to continue throughout the day for the next 12-15 hours with 28-30ml of rainfall expected
NB the slip has occurred in a location which does not permit use of the Old Military Road diversion route
Diversion is in place with police and VMS signs flagging the diversion – please visit the Traffic Scotland website here for realtime information .

Response

BEAR Scotland is working closely with the police to ensure motorists are aware of the closure
The first step in the response is for Geotechnical Experts to confirm the stability of the slope to ensure the safety of the workers undertaking a clear up operation
There are a number of excavators, clear-up vehicles and around 25 BEAR engineers and operatives on site waiting to start the clear up operation

Brian Gordon, BEAR Scotland’s MD says: ‘We are working as hard as possible to get the A83 fully open again. Safety is the top priority. We have instigated our planned response to this type of situation.’
