Don't often comment much on here but am really disappointed and surprised by the negative review from the former Rector of Campbeltown Grammar school.
Whether you enjoyed the book or not WC1 A note of congratulations would have been nice for one of Campbeltown Grammar former pupils.
Nit picking was not necessary.

The reviews you have received in the press alone say it all. And book sales say more.

Oh,Being an outsider I had no idea I was crossing swords with the former Rector of the Grammar school.If I had I would have taken more care with my own spelling and punctuation in my previous posts! One of the biggest thrills my late father had, in his dotage, was being sent a blazer badge bearing the grammar school crest by his sister.I calculate he must have started there circa 1920!

I believe an earlier poster suggested reviewing the book. It would be kind of pointless if everyone had to write it was a literary masterpiece just because the writer was a local. Surely we should say it as we see it.

As that very poster Gizmo I agree and believed there would be both positive and negative views. Nevertheless, I thought the author would respect all views including those of WC1 who gave both opinions of what he liked and disliked. I doubt very much that the writer wanted a love-fest on his book and would appreciate what readers really think.

While I agree opinions are helpfully and not everyone enjoys the same books. My point was as former Rector of CGS perhaps a "however well done on the books success" for a former pupil would have been nice.

Maybe I'm just nit picking of course!!!

Yep, I agree with that too but from my own experience, once many folk become leaders the ability to say 'Well done' seems to melt away. I'm not saying this is the case here of course, it's just my opinion!

It is totally irrelevant as to what position anyone has served. This is a forum for posters to express their views, no matter what their profession has been! Whether an individual's comments are critical or favourable, that person has the right to express their view, as we all do, regardless of profession.

Have to agree with WC1 as I found the book a bit dull and certainly wouldn't recommend just on the basis that the author attended CGS ..

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion.I just thought there was an slightly sour taste to some of the criticism.I would have thought there may have been even the slightest element of local pride in the fact that the author was having such success with his first printed effort, even though it was not considered to be a great piece of literature! It seems there is more green to be found in Campbeltown than that displayed on the slopes of Knockscalbert!

WC1.Humble apologies for any offence .Had I known of your service to the community and the position you held I ,hopefully,would have modified my remarks accordingly.The more thoughtful of we offsprings of Scots expats have an appreciation of the superiority of the Scottish education system over the one we have to endure in England.I am sure you are one of the many who have upheld that tradition. NB.What was the name of that FP,or at least the name of his book.Sounds interesting.
