Campbeltown Bunkhouse hosts open day ahead of opening

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Mon Mar 05, 2012 11:52 pm

The former school on Lorne Street is nearing completion as Campbeltown's first Bunkhouse after a painstaking restoration programme and to celebrate the near completion of this historic building the Kintyre Amenity Trust are holding an open day this Saturday (10th March 2012) from 10.00am to 2.00pm.

The school was built in 1851 as a direct result of the Disruption of 1843 when the disquiet within the Church of Scotland over patronage reached a climax. The result was that a number of congregations split and formed the new Free Church of Scotland. In 1867 the new Free Church was built in Campbeltown, the building, now the Heritage Centre, is known as the Tartan Kirk. At that time most schools were church schools and it was important that a school was built quickly. The Free Church surrendered the school to the School Board established under the 1872 Education Act and finally ceased operation as a school when the provision of mainstream schooling increased. Alexander Ross was the only teacher at the Free Church School throughout its years of operation. The building was returned to the Church and until recently was used as a store though some folk remember it being home to the Assessor’s office.

In recent years it has fell in to a tragic state of disrepair until the Kintyre Amenity Trust purchased to preserve this interesting piece of local history.

Wow! The bunkhouse looks amazing! For some reason I never really noticed this building until relatively recently, which is hard to believe considering how dilapidated it was before the restoration work. It really does look impressive now, though, and it’s nice to hear some of its history. Unfortunately, I’m going to be in Glasgow this weekend, so won’t get the chance to attend the open day but I hope it goes well!

Looking for someone to operate the bunkhouse.....

"The Campbeltown Backpackers’ Bunkhouse is a new facility which has been created through the repair and adaptation of the Old School in Big Kiln Street Campbeltown. The building owners the Kintyre Amenity Trust (KAT) have worked with Argyll & Bute Council, Highlands & Islands Enterprise and Strathclyde Building Preservation Trust to undertake this project which has been funded (in its latter stages) by the Campbeltown Townscape Heritage Initiative, the European Regional Development Fund and by the Kintyre Amenity Trust utilising their own resources and funds from HIE and Argyll & Bute Council . Building work will be completed in spring 2012 and it is anticipated that the Bunkhouse will be ready to open for business in April or May this year.
Expressions of interest from potential operators were received in late 2011 and the opportunity to operate the Bunkhouse business is now being offered for tender. This represents an unusual “Walk in and Go” business opportunity. "

Happy memories of working here during 1976 whilst it was the Asssessors, although George, John and I were usually "out of office" surveying just about every house in the area from Campeltown to Lochgilphead and often stopping for some refreshment at Tarbert at lunchtimes. "Loved" the shared toilet at the back. Great to see it restored to better use!
