WHY did he not enlighten the parents and community of Southend??? The old saying... "to be forearmed is to be forewarned"!!!

Your wrong, there is no education committee on Argyll & Bute Council.

If you truly want to save your school you might consider to stop attacking the people trying to help you.

If you are going to quote me please get it right that is not what I said.

I am sure John that ALL the parents of Southend are grateful for all the help to save the school, and "attacking" I can assure you I am not, I am only stating the fact that you did say at the meeting last nite that you knew 6 months ago that Southend Primary was on the "possible" closure list, but you opted not to inform the School, parents or community as it would have been an unnecessary worry incase it never went through, I have double checked with a few who was at the meeting and I never picked you up wrong. We feel that if you had informed the necessary people, they would have been prepared. Donald Kelly stated he had not seen that list and informed the meeting if he had done so, he would have informed the school ect.

Wee southender, I appreciate you coming back to clarify - so I would like to do likewise, I know that this is an all-consuming important issue and people will get emotional and hot under the collar about it - others will use it to attempt to make political mileage, which we've seen already on here. Please believe me I do understand it. I went to Glenbarr Primary School, now also under threat, there were about 45 kids in the school in them days, my brothers kids would all hope to go there in future, but its situation is just as difficult as Southend’s, I will do what I can for both.

First to clarify, and excuse me if this is a bit long winded!

the school estate ( all the school buildings) have been under review since well before the current economic crisis. The thinking behind that review was that there were schools in Argyll & Bute which were costing a great deal per pupil to run, they were suffering from chronic under investment in maintenance. It was considered that there was capacity within the estate to reasonably relocate a proportion of teachers and pupils to reduce costs without affecting the standard of education.

Various seminars took place to get the views of elected members, and to explain the condition of the school estate. I think it is fair to say that there was a significant number of Councillors who felt that the education budget was overly protected, and should be trimmed to ensure that there were sufficient funds to address the major problems of the time - the roads maintenance, Argyll & Bute historically has the worst roads in Scotland. I am pretty sure all the local councillors attended these initial seminars. I did at that time highlight the importance of rural schools to much more than just the education of the children, the very existence of communities now-a-days can depend on the public facilities they have such as schools.

The outcome of these seminars was a presentation which took place over 6 months ago, All councillors were invited, I think all councillors bar a few, made th effort to attend. It was made clear that the presentation was not in any way supposed to represent proposals. Indeed it was insisted that members treated the presentation as confidential as they were only ideas which were liable to change significantly the seminar was to see if the ideas presented represented the kind of school proposals that might sit easily with the elected members - That was the first time Southend was mentioned - Both Rory and I went up like Roman candles - Rory even uttered the immortal lines "over my dead body". Given the assurances we had that there was no proposal and that members would be further consulted if there would be, I did not consider it worth worrying anyone about the proposal by leaking the information. Crying wolf would have caused me lots of problems with trust when dealing with future issues with council officers and would have been viewed very differently by the community if id cried wolf and nothing happened. Given the assurance that consultation would take place, I felt fairly comfortable that we were covered. And I think we are. Without knowing the detail that we now know, it would have been pointless mounting a challenge then, as there would have been nothing to challenge.

This has taken me 2 hours to put together - 2 hours of my time wasted that i might have been working with you. I hope we can use this forum as a positive force to fight for the school instead off bickering amongst ourselves - so lets ALL go for it :)

Hi,

There is now a Facebook page for 'Small Argyll & Bute Schools are the Heart of their Communities' http://www.facebook.com/pages/Small-Argyll-Bute-Schools-are-the-Heart-of-their-Communities/175330829150783

This takes a look at the wider value that smaller schools play in their communities. It is a coming together of parents from threatened schools and parents of non threatened schools, as well as the wider communities and other interested parties. Schools play an important part in community life and help keep younger and older members mixing together.

As it states in the Curriculum for Excellence 'Social wellbeing refers to being and feeling secure in relationships with family, friends and community, having a sense of belonging and recognising and understanding our contribution in society.'

If you feel that the Council has got its priorities wrong in serving communities by shutting primary schools that offer an excellent education, whilst rooting the children in their community, then please 'Like' this page and tell your friends, if you are a Facebook user. Please feel free to comment on the page or start a discussion.

Here is a link to the revised proposed school closures http://www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/moderngov/ieListDocuments.aspx?MId=4340&x=1 . If you haven't already signed the petition to save the schools like Southend Primary that would be damaging for the children and the community to close - please do. The thread has links to the online petition and where you can sign a paper copy.

Please help if you can. Cllrs Colville and Kelly will be at a public meeting tomorrow night at Southend Primary School at 8pm.

Good luck to all those people who left home before it was light to go to Kilmory to show the Council that shutting good rural schools is bad for the children, and bad for their communities. It is disappointing that the Council has seen fit to again hold the public meeting in Kilmory when last time (Nov 2nd) only one representative from each school could fit in the room leaving the majority of protesters out in the cold for hours. Makes you wonder who the public meetings are for?

Newly formed Argyll Rural Schools Network is fighting the closures as a group, including parents of schools that are not threatened, showing their solidarity. As communities we need to hold on to what makes as communities and that includes the schools that are the heart of our communities. A statement was issued from last night's first meeting in Lochgilphead of ARSN http://forargyll.com/2010/11/school-closures-new-argyll-rural-schools-network-throws-down-gauntlet/.

If you haven't already done so please lobby all the Councillors and the Council staff who put these flawed proposals together - you can copy and paste their emails from here https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B9wSj1FpWbzfZjU4NjBiZGMtNTEzNi00OTdiLTgyNDMtOTA0NTJhZGY4NmZl&authkey=CLSYvIcM&hl=en_GB&pli=1 and don't forget to email cleland.sneddon@argyll-bute.gov.uk and carol.walker@argyll-bute.gov.uk at the Education Department. It is unlikely that the fight will end today causing more distress to the children and parents of the threatened schools.

All the school proposals (flawed, inaccurate and illogical as they are) are going to the legal stage of consultation. It is a disgrace.
