New Dental Centre for Campbeltown

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Fri Jan 09, 2009 11:57 pm

Excellent news. I am sure Tartan Seer will be happy I just dumped this from the BBC website.

In health, £50m will be brought forward to deliver vital NHS projects, including new dental centres in Cumnock, Ayr, Campbeltown and Inverness and the new Foresterhill Health Centre in Aberdeen.

Not before time too.

This is excellent news.

I only hope this also means additional dentists and the opportunity to get an appointment whether private or not. :)

Indeed I am delighted with this investment in Campbeltown - my gripe was with the 'dumping' of a Scotsman story that was little more than a Tory press release - which is a concrete demonstration of support for the people of South Kintyre. Well done Mr Swinney. :D

Always thought your mouth was in your arse!

My point was the fact I am one of many people who are not registered with the Dentists in the town - whether private or not. I can't get an appointment unless it is an emergency. I can of course travel to Glasgow to get an appointment with a dentist in Shawlands - which of course is convenient if you stay in Glasgow. :@

I must admit there is no commitment for the local dental practice to see you even if it is an emergency but they always have which is good of them. They've had their hands tied so the news of a new dental practice must be good news all round. 8)

Further update and breakdown on the funds available.

Dental facilities share £82m fund - Dentist working on teeth

The aim is to enhance dental access right across Scotland

Health boards across Scotland are set to share almost £82m for projects aimed at improving the nation's teeth.

NHS Grampian, which will receive £7.62m, plans a multi-agency health centre at Foresterhill and dental centres in Huntly and Fraserburgh.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran plans dental centres in Cumnock and Ayr and a resource centre in Ardrossan for GPs and dentists.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and NHS Highland also propose major projects.

The plan is to create 13 new stand-alone dental centres across Scotland and two other centres which will form part of multi-purpose health facilities.

Other projects across the country include multi-function health centres and GP premises, as well as grants to community pharmacists.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde plans a £9m replacement of Possilpark Health Centre - accommodating GPs, dentists and other community health partners - from its £21.5m allocation.

NHS Highland plans a dental centre in Oban and surgeries in Inverness, Thurso, Dingwall and Campbeltown from its £5.64m share of the funding.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "In the tough climate we find ourselves in, capital projects are a crucial way for the government to stimulate the economy by providing local employment opportunities.

"That is why the projects outlined today represent not just better health facilities for people the length and breadth of Scotland, but also a lifeline for some of the hardest-hit sectors of our economy like construction.

"Since May 2007, this government has made NHS dentistry a top priority and these projects are further evidence of our determination to reverse the years of decline seen under previous administrations."

She added that the opening of Scotland's third dental school in Aberdeen last October would lead to more trained dentists entering the NHS.

The announcement comes at a time when the number of people on waiting lists for NHS dental treatment in Grampian has risen to more than 30,000.

NHS Grampian said the funding would make a big difference to dental services in the area.

SCOTTISH DENTAL INVESTMENT
Ayr and Arran - £6.97m
Borders - £1.35m
Dumfries and Galloway - £2.01m
Fife - £6.11m
Forth Valley - £3.25m
Grampian - £7.62

Lanarkshire - £6.47m
Lothian - £11.42m
Orkney - £1.35m
Shetland - £1.35m

Just an observation regarding the posters who say they are not registered. I assume by what you have written that you only use the dentist when you have an emergency?

On a number of occasions when attending the dentist I have noticed that some in the queue are only there because they are in pain and have been told they will be seen but have to wait. One man told me he hadn't been to the dentist for years. Not sure if he was looking to be given a medal for that stupid statement.

On one occasion one of these "irregular patients" was taken in for treatment before people who had appoinments. A bit unfair because if they looked after their dental hygene through regular visits then maybe they would not need to there and disrupting the daily schedule. It's a tad annoying for regular patients who have clocked off work and are losing money by sitting in a dentists waiting room longer than they hoped.

There could be reasons why people are not registered but can I ask if you don't go to the dentist in Campbeltown at present why should you go in the future apart from when you get toothache through neglect of your oral hygene.

Just trying to stir debate not the other stuff

I am registered and thanfully have never had the need for an emergency appointment.
However, I was still shocked when I called in November to make an appointment for my annual check-up. First available date - end of April! Remember the good old days of dentists sending out appointment cards, or reminders for check-ups. I think they should go back to that - and if people don't show up, they should be removed from the register. These days it would be simple to e-mail or even text appointments, so I can't see a cost arguement.

I know several people who have moved here in recent years and simply can't register due to numbers - there are probably hundreds registered locally who never use the service and are taking up valuable spaces as far as I am concerned.

Hels I go every 6 months and with 3 months to go I go in and make an appointment. I agree with you about some of the people who are registered and don't go anymore or even turn up if they have an appoinment. I think that may be the reason for the practice stopping putting out appointments. It was then left to the patient to make the appoinment themselves and if they hadn't been for 2 years? They were removed from the patient list. Classic case of use it or loose it.

Good idea about the email appoinments. :D

The simple fact is that the patient list at the local dentists is closed and you can not get onto it. You complain about having to wait an extra 10 minutes and miss work, what about those who have to travel to Tarbert and back and pay private fees or those who travel to Glasgow ?

You can only hope that Campbeltown can attract enough dentists to Campbeltown to make the proposed new facility a success.

Mr.Everready wrote:You complain about having to wait an extra 10 minutes and miss work,

Apologies for not being clearer on that point Mr Everready, it was almost an hour.

Mr.Everready wrote:what about those who have to travel to Tarbert and back and pay private fees or those who travel to Glasgow ?

I know 2 people who use the Tarbert practice just because they prefer to go private, not sure of how many more have to go there because they can't get on the local list. Maybe they let their "membership" lapse.

We do need another facility in the town to cover more patients especially disabled who have no chance of visiting the one in Cross Street as there is no disabled access to my knowledge.

Yes. Great choice isn't it?

Doesn't mean it is someone who isn't registered - could be someone who is and is just suffering dis-comfort which they need addressed. This could happen to anyone. (but do agree it is more likely to happen to us un-hygenic people. 8) )
From a personal point of view I have had to sit and wait until there is a chance to be seen - I would have sat all day if it meant waiting my turn.

Why? What option is there? Register with a dentist in Glasgow? I made the fatal mistake of missing an appointment when I moved to Glasgow 11 years ago to return home a year later to find out I couldn't register. The only time I could ever see a dentist was in the case of an emergency - as mentioned before to which I am enternally thankful for. My only option is to now travel to Glasgow to see a dentist - which I don't.

History wrote:Just trying to stir debate not the other stuff
Ironically enough, I was going to delete my post last night so glad I never as it too was trying to stir a bit of debate. Which the above is History, it's my experience but I can agree with you on the points about those who don't make the effort,. I do but have no choice which is frustrating.

I recall as a student the term "soap dodger" being used to describe students. Now seems some of us have progressed into "toothpaste dodgers" 8)

Moral of the story - don't move to Glasgow.

No just dentist dodgers  :D

I'm sure you could afford to go private in Tarbert 8)

Seems to be a problem in general trying to get registered no matter where you stay. Hopefully the new facility in Campbeltown will allow all those folk like yourself who were caught out and struck off to get regular check ups again.
